I just clipped my dogs nails. He is still clicky on the floor. I have clippers with the guard on them but my question is how far do I go? He has 2 white nails on each of his back paws but all the others are black so I'm a bit nervous everytime I do it (I have Quick Stop on hand). Am I supposed to clip down where the thick part starts? For now I just clipped the tip of them off. Should I leave them as is? Thank You!

Well Jack had a visit at the vet. It was horrible. He freaked out as usual. Anyway, the vet took a quick look at his nails and said I did fine. So I guess I'm doing something right

Here's a tip for you, I used to be a groomer and clipped nails, if you are still wanting more off, get a piece of sandpaper and scrape each nail in a backwards direction, it works wonders.
it also smoothes off the sharp edges left from the clippers.

Theoretically you are supposed to be able to go back to the thick stuff, I have done this before and accidently caused bleeding, I don't take the chance now, I cut about half way down the hollow part then use the sandpaper.

Hello,

I have been a groomer for about 2 1/2 years. My trainer taught me, when trimming black nails, to trim just a little bit off at a time until you see a little black gel like thing in the middle of the nail. THis means you are getting close to the quick and it is good to stop. On white nails most of the time you can see the quick and i always leave a sliver of nail left between the quick and my trimmers, just to be on the safe side. I have always done this and it works well. Of course it is harder to trim the black nails like this if the dog does not coperate, so good luck!!

P.S. I don't know about trimming until it gets thick. Sorry

Chrystal, you are suppose to cut close to the pink when cutting your dog's nails. That's what the vet said. If your vet said they look good, you must be stopping before you get them too short. The pink is to let you know when to stop.

Barbara that is all well and fine, when you can see the pink, but some of the nails as stated are black, and I know you definately can't see any pink in black nails, so you have to have other guide lines, I have cut nails on hundreds of dogs and always do it this way, cut half of the hollow bit then sand off the rest, I have had clients who are old, one lady walked the whole of my old town to get me to do this, as the nails even after clipping ripped her sensitive old skin. Needless to say I put her walker in my car, scolded her (nicely) for not ringing me to pick up her dog and drove her home.

I am no expert on trimming nails but this is what I do. When I have a new dog or pup come in, the first thing I concentrate on is handling their feet. I do this by feeding them by hand. Each time I handle a paw they get a fistfull of food. Once they are comfortable with this then the first time I do their feet I sit on the floor and and I put the dog on their back with their head in my lap and a leg on either side. I usually have them muzzled the first time for saftys sake. Then if they have long nails that are black I will have a metal nail file with me and the clippers. I use the file for two things. First I very gently and carefully dig the dirt out of the nail and at the same time I always find the place where the quick starts. Once that is found I put the file down, pick up the clippers and clip just before where I found the quick. Then I pick up the file and smooth it out. I give the dog a treat after each nail. Black nailed dogs will take me longer then white nailed ones. My doberman cross now will roll over on her back when I tell her too. She cares more about getting the treat them the clipping. LOL Anyway, I know this is not how groomers do it and they are the experts but I have no proffesional grooming knowledge so I just thought I would just let you know what I do.

I agree with ellirat. I file my dog's nails down until I feel they are short and smooth enough. With black nails, you can still tell where the quick is. It looks a little thicker and pinker there. The thick part is not always the best place to cut to, becasue if the nails have grown long, the quick may not be receded.
