Not sure how true it is but I have heard the same thing. I don't think you need to give dogs regular baths especially if they are inside dogs. Maybe more than 3 times of year though.

I've never heard that before. I give my dogs a bath once a week and it doesn't dry their skin out.

I guess it really depends on the breed of the dog. I take my shih tzu a bath twice as much times as I take my pug. So its really a case to case basis. But I cannot imagine giving him just 3x/year baths. If youre really not keen on giving baths, maybe atleast once a month will do for long haired breeds and longer for short haired ones.

You can bathe your dog more than 3 times a year, about once every 3 weeks if inside, leave a bit longer if outside, the natural oil in their coat keeps the skin healthy, and acts as a barrier against wet and cold. If you bathe too often you wash this off. Inside dogs you will obviously want to wash as often as every 3 weeks as they can get a real doggy smell from lack of air in their coats and on their skin.

Yes I don't bathe my labs that often, I go to all the trouble of getting them smelling nice, then they go swim in the dam and that's it,lol. they stink again, but on another post I have written about Ellie loosing her fur, do you think if I bathe her, it will make it better or worse?

Vets say you can safely bathe your dog once a week. Who on earth would want an old stinky dog that only gets bathed 3 times a year in their house, on their furniture, etc. I've never heard of this before. If I had to live with a stinky dog in my house, I would have to move out! Jiggy, if you really want to know, ask your vet or groomer. That way, you'll know your'e safe.

I don't think it is too true. My pup has to be bathed at least once a week if not more because we are going to a grocery store or restraunt and she has to be really clean to do that. We use a special organic shampoo for puppies that we dilute and then follow it up with a coat and skin conditioner also for puppies and also organic. Her skin is just fine and her coat is very silky and soft. Being a service dog in training only bathing 3 times a year is just not practical and definately not higenic for going into businesses with food. I think part of it is the type of shampoo you use for the dog or puppy and if you use a skin and coat conditioner or not. Nicole & Sheena

Boy do I wish I could bath mine more than 3 times a year. It takes me over 30 minutes on the Dog blowers & she's still damp.
Since it's minus 30 here for months on end - it's simply not practical. A toy version that washs up in the sink - weekly great. 100lb + long haired mutt - smelly is better than sick.
Now with the dog wipes I can keep them NON Stinky and clean in between real baths.

I resent the comment that an unbathed dog stinks! I've bathed mine twice in six years. He doesn't stink and neither does my house! [ April 17, 2004, 01:34 PM: Message edited by: Joe1 ]

Regular baths may dry the digs skin, but it is unlikely. It depends on your dog. Dogs with certain skin conditions could not stand being bathed so regularly. Excessive bathing is not good for a dog as it strips the skin of natural oils and can make the dog look worse rather than better. Many dogs get bathed once a year if lucky and have no poblems and do not smell or make the house smell.

I think you'd find it amazing the relationship between diet, odor and skin condition in general. On a good diet many dogs dont naturally smell badly. I find that when ive got the diet right, brushing frequently is more beneficial than bathing frequently.

Using a good quality shampoo is important too...that's why I use Rio Vista's Products.
