I have an 8 month old Brittany that has localized demodectic mandge. She was spayed in Aug. and has recently developed an infection. She is now on antibiotics for it. I am using Goodwinol ointment for the mange spots. Has anyone used this ointment, or is not effective? Is there a better way to treat this w/o making the dog sick? I realize that there a injections and dips, but will they make her sick, or is this the best tx for her? I,m suppose to see results hopefully in aprox. 4 weeks, and can I safely wait and see? I HAVE TWO WITH IT! IT HAS BEEN A MONTH. TAKING MY VETS ADVICE WOULD HAVE MENT A DIP. I AM STILL WATCHING HAIR FALL OUT AND RESEARCHING HOURS AND HOURS. I LIVE IN SUCH A RURAL AREA AND THERE AREN'T MANY VETS AROUND TO CHOOSE FROM.
SOOO FRUSTRATING. LOTS OF VETS ON THE NET RECOMMEND LETTING IT RUN IT'S COURSE. THIS WORKS IN 80-90 PERCENT OF DOGS. Not yet in my cases. I am wondering how long am I supposed to wait, and what is going to happen between now and the healing if I let them heal themselves. So many unanswerd questions about this subject. I have gone to holistic sites tonight as well to see if they had some answers.. they did help.

My australian shephard mix was born with demodectic mange. She recieved it from her mother. She had it on one of her back legs, i was fustrated, and did research on the problem. I found in another forum that this one lady her pet had sarcoptic mange. It was really bad, and she tried everything in the book to heal her pet, by what the vet recommended. She spent alot of money, and nothing seemed to help.
Then she heard about this herb called neem, that heals all types of issues. She said that helped her dog clear the mange.
So I decided to try it on my dog, I used the Neem leaf extract on my dog everyday. Put it on her once a day, until i started noticing that her hair was growing back on the spot where the vet took a skin test to determine she had mange. I had asked the vet if in that area she had shaved my dogs leg to get the skin test. She said no, so it grew back with the neem. Vet said her leg was looking good.

Scabies is another term for mites, which is what mange is.

I've never dealt with mange, but I was under the impression that it was caused by an infection not parasites.

Mange is caused by mites. Different types of mange are caused by different types of mites. Nasty stuff!

my buddy has a presa can/ab mix that had mange so bad, they vet advised him to put it to sleep. he spent a lot of bread with the vet to no avail, eventually it was impossible to not look at his dog and not get sad. he had to do the only human thing and put him down.
