What would be an appropriate water intake for a 7 week old. I've always just left water out, but i was thinking if there was a controlled amount then it would help on potty training. and also to help potty training at night should i take his water away at a certain time of night??? I've heard all of this stuff before but not sure if its humane. i thought dogs needed water at all times esp. puppies.

I wouldn't take it away. There is no sure way of knowing how much he needs. It all depends on temp, diet, salt, activity level, and metabolic rate. You can however not offer any at night (I don't recommend it) but you will still have to take him out perhaps 2 hours after you put him to bed.

how come you just have one 7 week old? at this age they should still be with mum and the rest of the litter, never buy a pup younger than eight weeks, its not good for them to wean them any younger.

I think he just got it (not sure.) Anyway 7 weeks is the usual age to wean over here. Some go much younger (like 4-5 weeks) which is just completely unacceptable.

Six weeks is what any vet we have ever encountered suggested. No younger for sure.

OK mayb its just common practise over here to wait longer. Personally i refuse to totally wean my puppies and sell them til they are ten weeks and have had their first shot. The longer the better as far as most vets over here are concerned. Saves quite a few early health problems. (not sure what - might ask my dad since he's the vet in the family)

Well, they've already had their first shots at 7 weeks over here.

OK it is just country differences then, our vets wont give shots until 8 weeks of age at the earliest and prefer to wait until 10 weeks of age.
Different for different breeds generally tiny breeds like norwich terriers could go six weeks but giant breeds like great danes should NEVER go earlier than 8 weeks preferably 10.

Hmmm..I was thinking it would be the other way around? Can you sort of explain why? It just doesn't make sense to me. I know that our little dogs always have a much tougher time recouping from shots.

oh i didnt mean shots, body weight makes a big difference on shots, i meant for weaning, smaller dogs tend to develop relatively faster than larger dogs. its cause the dont have to grow so fast for so long so they dont need the highest level of puppy nutrition for so long. Sorry that was really unclear.
