ok, i have a question...
IF your dog is in heat and sucessfully breeded, would she come out of heat immediately or would she go through the rest of her heat cycle?
and
IS their any way of a female dog to be in heat without showing any of the signs... freedom (dog not in heat) has been trying to mount my dog that is in heat..?

This is the way it was told to me. I hope this helps. We have had 3 succefull litters of German Shepherds pups following this outline.
Just because your dog has been successful been bred does not mean she will immediately come out of season. Once a female will stand for a male she can be bred for 5 to 9 days after which she will no longer stand for a male.
Do not allow any male near her until you are absolutely certain the mating cycle is over and her time of acceptance is past. If another male breeds with her you could have a split litter, Part from the first male and part from the second male.
Here is how a cycle may run: At the beginning of the cycle it hard to tell if a female is in season. Some of the signs are appetite increases, she becomes restless vulva begins to swell. That usually last 5 days. After that the discharge it starts bright red and gradually turns pink and then cream color that last about 10 days on day 9 of the 10 – 11 day she will want to play with the male dog. On day 12 she will accept a male that usually last from day 12 -16 / day 17 -18 ovulation period. 19-20 she will not accept the male. Then it starts all over after 158 days, usually. My female is every 6 months or 2 times a year if she has not been bred within that year. If she has been bred the whelping throws off the schedule by a month or so. I will give you an example she was in season March 2003 – She was bred and gave birth in June 2003. She then came back into season in Nov 2003
If she is not in season The other reason may be a dominance issue. One trying has dominance over the other. [ January 03, 2004, 02:11 PM: Message edited by: Deb ]

A lot of animals will display mounting behaviour among females in heat - its actually THE major sign of cows being in heat that farmers look for to AI their stock. Lou

lou, so you are telling me that even though freedom(dog NOT in heat) can be in heat even though she isnt swollen or nothing?
and also, my female that is in heat got "mounted" i dont know if they even got started, i know it was over a week and a half a go and she is still standing for males, so does that mean she is NOT pregnant?
NO im not wanting a litter, i am preventing it from happening, the reason i say i dont think they got even started is because i turned around long enough to get a drink (2min max) and ran out the door pretty well as soon as he mounted her or atleast within 2 minutes after he tried...i know it wasnt any longer than 2 minutes. and last night another male tried getting to her, i KNOW he DIDNT mount her because he kept coming back towards her even with me fighting him and her so i could get her inside. he was just approaching her as i walked outside. i keep her inside unless i am watching her.
and how can i tell that she will no longer stand for males without letting a male get to her, i noticed last night she was doing ANYTHING to get to this male... but i wouldnt have it.
the male that came over last night went as far as following my dogs in the house.. this is not normal behavior for dogs around here, usually they see us and book it.. could that have been because he was VERY interested in angel?
ok, i think i am done now, i have so many questions because i have never owned a female dog, and i have never been through this before.. if you guys would/could please help me. i understand for the most part, but i have never bred a dog and choose to never breed one.. angel will be spayed as soon as she comes out of heat whether my hubby likes it or not. I WILL NOT have a litter of pups that i wont be able to find homes for.

Freedom isn't necessarily in heat. Lou was describing common cow behavior. A lot of times, it's one cow that does the mounting when other cows come into heat. She's the 'indicator,' and she's not the one heat - the 'mountee' is.

thats right - the cows NOT in heat will try and mount the cow that IS in heat. Angel seems to have been in heat for AGES now. Is it more than four weeks? thats really long even for a first heat. Freedom shoudlnt come into heat until around 6months to one yr. You could have ages yet, but yes i would suggest getting her done first since she might be imminently about to come into heat. Angel wont cycle again for another six months so you have plenty of time to get her done before her next cycle. Lou

i have been told by MANY people that since this is angels first heat cycle and she isnt pg, she will come in heat every month... but i have heard by MANY OTHERS that it will only come once every 4 to 6 months... now WHO DO I BELIEVE???????????????? i am so lost and confused at this point in time i cant stand it.. and yes lou, it seems like it has been forever and a day. i have sooooooooo many questions and i need so many answers.
QUESTIONS:
1) how long after a heat cycle does a female dogs genital area become unswollen? or does it stay swollen?
2) it seems like my dog has been willing to stand for dogs for about 2 WEEKS now, is that unusual, or do i just have a ****** dog?
3) HOW can i tell when she is out of heat, i mean her behavior isnt any better or worse than it use to be.. as soon as i started letting her in of a night i havent had any problems with her.. i mean no howling all hrs of the night or nothing..
IM SOOOOOOOOOO LOST......... help me PLEASE... im desperate....

Take her to a vet or a breeder near you and they'll see if shes out of heat. A dogs hormone cycle goes through about every 6 - 8 months. CATS come into heat every month not dogs. A dog's heat can LAST up to a month especially if its her first one. The period for which they will stand for a dog is usually around ten days but can be longer in some dogs. Hope this helps Lou

it helped, but since i have been keeping her inside and not let ANY males around her for quite some time, i dont know if she will still stand for them or not.. i know she is now mounting freedom and vise versa.. i dont know what is going on.. i just wish my hubby would have listened to me a long time ago and got them spayed when they was younger... but then again, the vets down here refuse to spay/neuter dogs till they are atleast 6 mos old... dont know why.. and one vet told me they will come in heat as soon as 5 mos old . so i was pretty well at a loss anyways because angel didnt come into heat till 6mos old and now i cant get her spayed till she comes out. all i know is at the end of the month, i am calling my humane society and they are putting me on the list FIRST to get them spayed.. i dont know if it matters if they are in heat or not. hopefully not because i want her FIXED.. i am tired of buggin you guys and tired of worrying about it. i have noticed that angel is getting thicker in the stomache area, but i dont know if that is because i have been keeping her inside more and not letting her run around as much or what.. any clues??
