hey all, new to the forum. i just got a 19 month old pit female. now when she is breathing or is getting pet, she kinda growls like a purr. but she gets really worked up w/it after about 20 seconds if you keep petting and barks. but she's licking me while i pet her. but then all of a sudden she gets the mean face on and starts to really growl. you'll have any idea/heard of this before? thx!

Sounds to me like it's more of a behavior problem than a breathing problem. Does she do this only when you're petting her?

Licking is a common submissive behavior. Maybe she's asking you to stop what you're doing as nicely as she can. When you don't stop, she quits being so nice. That's the first thing I thought of when I read your post...

I have no idea how to stop her from doing it, though.

Good luck!

When she starts growling - I would grab her by the scruff of her neck and tell her no in a firm voice. I wouldn't let her get away with too much of the growling. Especially being a pit - you have to be careful with them.

My rottweiler does the same exact thing. But only to men, never to me. At first my fiance and I didnt know if it was a happy growl or what until one day she did snap at him. It seems to me that whenever he tries to hug her or rub her back , she dosent want his hands behind her I think. And she dosent do it all the time I guess whenever shes in one of those moods. So whenever people come to visit I make sure to tell them not to mess with her back side and to let her see your hands at all times and this seems to work. But when she does start to growl my fiance will either grap her muzzle or tell her no or just say no in a stern voice and quit petting her, but as soon as he quits petting her she is right back up in his face wanting to be pet again, but i guess he just has to find a spot where shes comfortable with.
