When our Jack Russel urinates on the new lawn, it kills a patch of grass (roots as well) and nothing re-grows in that spot. Can you imagine what the lawn looks like after a few months of this? Surely the dog must be suffering too. What’s causes such a strong chemical reaction?

That's what ammonia will do to your grass. You should train him to go in a certain area, not your whole lawn.

My husband and I work in the grass seed industry. We love to see dogs going on the lawn because it's common for dog urine to kill grass. More sales! Female urine is worse than male urine.

This happens to me too, but I have 2 large dogs so the spots in my yard are the size of basketballs. But there are tablets at petsmart that you feed your dog like a treat that is supposed to help save your lawn. Not sure if they work or not but I'm gonna give it a try this spring.
