My pom got hit by a car, and suffered nerve damange in his rectum and he has no control over his bowels. My Vet took his tail off and asked me if I wanted to have him put down, I said no. Has anyone had this happened to their dog? Have you had any luck with dog diapers? I will try the diapers, but I am worried about the smell, he has been a house dog for 5 years, I know he will hate staying outside. Willing to try herbs or anything that will help. Is there anything out there that he can take that will keep his leaky bowels from smelling? [Confused]

Wow. I am a vet tech and this happened recently to one of our clients dogs. He was hit by a car and his tail was detached from his spine. He could not controll his bowels. So we amputated his tail. Then after that he couldnt have a bm at all. So then we had to go back in and reconstruct his rectum. He has been fine ever since. The amazing thing is that he is 15 years old and survived all of that. How old is your dog? Have you asked your vet if surgery on his rectum would help? If not, you will just have to get used to cleaning up after him or changing diapers. If he has been a house dog for his entire life, would it be fair to now make him an outside dog now that he cant "take care of himself"? I am very sympathetic to your situation and really do not want to upset you but it can be very difficult to take care of a pet with that sort of problem. However, it can be done. The question is, can you do it? In every situation like this, I think, "What would I do?" It is easy to give you advice as a vet tech but when Annabelle (my dog) is sick, every **** thing I have ever learned goes out the window. Just know that whatever decision you make is the right decision. Good luck to you and your dog.
