a female dog has a pro-oestrus that lasts 7 - 10 days and is when the bleeding occurs. After that she will have a 7-10 day oestrus which is when she is receptive to male dogs. it is probably wise to keep her away from male dogs for the whole 3 weeks. Lou

average is six months but it can be every five to ten. However if shes not highly valuble breeding stock you shouldnt breed from her and should really get her spayed, as much for her own health as to be a responsible dog owner. Lou

A dog is in heat for 3 weeks. 1 week in, 1 week to breed and 1 week out. I would keep her away from the male for the full 3 weeks, but the time she can get pregnant for sure is the 2nd week.

dallas angel - your timings are a little off, a dog has a 10 day prooestrus in which it cannot get pregnant (theoretically) then a 7 - 10 day oestrus during which they can get pregnant. This then marks the end of the oestrus cycle and the beginning of metoestrus. The dog theoretically can get pregnant if mated at any time between day 10 and day 21 but not before. There is no time that she is still in heat but cannot get pregnant after she starts standing for the male. she will stop standing for the male around day 18 - 21. She is then out of heat. She may then have a psuedopregnancy while in metoestrus, then goes into dioestrus ( interrupted by anoestrus which is the latent phase and is variable in length depending on the individual, pregnancy, to a certain extent breed, body condition, exposure to male dogs etc) then the cycle starts again. One of my labs comes on heat, doesn't stand until her 16th day, and keeps standing right up till 21-22 days, she hasn't got in when mated after about 19 days but I don't take chances with her, if she's not to be mated I keep her away from the male for a full 4 weeks. And I agree, If you can't guarantee selling the pups, get her spayed, you won't be able to give the pups away there are so many unwanted dogs. Also unspeyed females a prone to breast cancer!! food for thought.
-------------------- I love my labs.
