I need opinions. My lab mix has a partially torn cruciet in his right leg. The vet told me to get glucosimine for him. I know humans use it to repair cartilige, and for arthiritis, but how safe is it for dogs? Has anyone ever used it? How long should I keep him on it? They also told me to make sure he doesnt gain much weight. He is almost 70 lbs. and we are getting him fixed soon. When I get him fixed, wont that make him lazy? I want what is best for my dog, so please give me some opinions.

My lab also has a partial tear. She has had it since she was 10 months old. She has been on glucosamine ever since. My husband and I opted out of having surgery for her since she was so young and at that point the vet already saw that her hips were deteriorating. The chances were that if she had surgery she probably would tear it again.

She is now almost 4 years old. The vet is very impressed at how she moves (her vet is a member of the local kennel club were I train). We do not limit her activity, we just don't push her too hard. She lets us know when she has had enough.

The glucosamine seems to have worked wonders for her. There have been times when she hasn't gotten it for a few days in a row and boy, can you tell the difference. Basically, if you start you dog on a glucosamine treatment you will need to continue it for the course of your dogs life.

Hope all works out for you.
