as far as i know vets wont do a spaying if the dog is pregnant UNLESS you have them aborted. I know when i was looking to get my dogs spayed, they all said if they are pregnant i was going to have to wait till they had the babies. But neither of my dogs got pregnant.

spaying is not an optional extra when you have a dog - its just the responsible thing to do (valuble breeding stock excepted of course) so yeah spaying is always a good idea.

Ya know the more i get to thinking about it the more i feel it needs to be said....

With the spaying issue, i dont think it should be a big factor with just cats and dogs, it should be with any animal such as horses. They are in just as bad of shape as cats and dogs.

99% of male horses ARE gelded. It wouldnt be viable to sterilize mares, partly because of the hugely increased risks and cost and partly because the mares may change hands any number of times and an infertile mare would be drastically reduced in value. Just because one owner doesnt want to breed doesnt mean the next one wont. Also there arent really the same issues with horses. There are very few real health benefits and its much less likely that an unsterilized mare will accidently get pregnant compared to an unsterilized b.itch or queen.
Its a case of weighing up the benefits against the risks. with mares risks outweigh, with dogs and cats benefits outweigh and there are real risks with not sterilizing.

IMO it's always good to spay or neuter our canine pets....and don't forget our feline friends too!

lol - would they do that? If you have a dog with a good pedigree and good conformation that will positively contribute to their breed then why not have a litter? Its the irresponsible breeding of dogs that arent good quality and dont have impeccable pedigrees that people should be getting annoyed with.

I truely think that anyone who wants to breed their b*tch needs to volunteer at a shelter for at least a month. If it doesn't bother you that one of your pups might end up there, that is a choice you make.
As far as the comments made about horses, I agree with the fact the a mare doesn't usually get accidentally bred. There are too many horses out there right now due to irresponsible breeders. There are plenty of mares out there that should never be bred. So many owners bred simply for the fact of having a newborn foal. I will always promote anyone looking for to add a new member to the family to check out the rescues. There is every kind of dog breed rescue out there as well as awesome horse rescues. Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation American Standardbred Rescue Retired Thoroughbred Rescue Spring Hills Horse and PMU rescue Foal Train PMU rescue
Those are just a few. Please, be responsible. All these animals are here for are our enjoyment. They deserve love and respect from us. Okay I am done now. Sorry [Smile]

Hey the Momo,
I cant believe someone called you a troll for breeding, even some of the best of breeders can have a dog in the pounds. While everyone critizes and judges us breeders, here is something heartwarming.
I took on a pony that was going to the knackery, i swapped all my grooming gear for her, she has some vices yes, but i love her anyway, she has 10 acres to be free on, i am about to adopt another in a months time.
I took a kitten that had been dumped at 2 weeks.
I took 3 chickens from the egg farm, with no feathers, cut beaks and claws curling.
All I can say is these animals are all doing well, love me, my kids and hubby, and if i come across any animal in need i would take it on.
P.S. I breed purebred Labradors. Does that make me bad!!!!!

I love my labs.

I don't want everyone to think that breeding animals is bad or evil. I simply believe that there are so many people out there the breed simply for the wrong reasons. Because of those who think they are going to get rich off of breeding, our shelters are full. Questions to ask yourself, Am I willing to keep all of the offspring my animal produces if I cannot sell them? Am I willing to keep them longer than usual to ensure that I find the right home for them? If you can do this, you are on the right direction. I really don't want anyone to think that I feel you are a bad person if you breed a domesticated animal. Just do it with the right intentions. To better a breed, to produce high quality pets that will be an asset to society, etc. Sorry if I offended anyone.
