Topic: Distemper...completely freaked out

Well, this morning I knew nothing about distemper. But yesterday, we put a puppy on hold at the humane society (although we couldn't play with her because she had just gotten spayed). We were going to pick her up to bring home today, but we looked on the internet to show her to a friend, and she wasn't there anymore, so we were afraid they adopted her out to someone else, and so we called.
Apparently in the truck that my puppy was brought up from new mexico in, there was a puppy with distemper. He was put to sleep yesterday. Now, our puppy is in quarentine. She seemed to be extremely healthy when we were there playing with her today, just like a normal puppy. But, one of the other puppies in the quarentine area had a wheezy bark, and I'm afraid that even if my puppy didn't get it, she will if one of the other puppies is affected. Do you think it would be too much to ask for the humane society to quarentine her seperately from the other puppies? I don't want her geting it if she doesn't have it already.
Aftre reading about the disease, we are horribly worried, and already very attatched to the puppy. We can't bring her home, because where she'll be staying has another dog. But I don't want her around the other puppies! Not to mention I think even if she doe have it, she should be in a nice, clean enviroment, and the quarentine center is not the cleanest place in the world. I was considring bringing her new crate, pillow, and potty pads tommorow, as well as giving her a bath (being dirty never got anyone anywhere), as well as bringing her her new kong toy.
We bought all her stuff before we found out about distemper (as I said, we were expecting to pick her up earlier today, and we don't care too much about the money, otherwise we wouldn't be getting a puppy, but should I give a dog with distemper things that would proably be given to another puppy later, if she had to be put to sleep?
Please, I'd like some advice, I don't want the puppy going through this. I'd also like to know f you guys think they'd be willing to quarentine her seprately, I'll be calling them about that in the morning.

I dont know anything about distemper or anything like that. I just wanted to wish you good luck on the situation. Please keep us posted on how it turns out.

You should prepare yourself for the worst. Distemper is a horrible disease and if the puppy is affected, a humane death is best. The dog I lost to the disease did not have any wheasy chest sound. The only way we knew she was sick was that she looked like she had to go poop & couldn't. She kept trying & trying until there was blood. She caught it from an older animal who survied the disease but still carried it. That animal was lame. I was at the vets last year when someone brought in a pup that the owner thought was poisoned - and an autopsy showed distemper. You might want to contact the humane society & see if they'll let you keep the puppy at your place away from all other animals. (Disinfect everything) and if she is clear now, then the vaccine might still work. Good Luck. Let us know what happened.

9 puppies were put to sleep night before last, My pup and all of the puppies in her quarentine area were NOT put to sleep, thank goodness. But now we get to add another 2 weeks to her quarentine time :-P We still got our fingers crossed she won't get it, we'd hate to see a tiny little adorable puppy get put to sleep, especially one we've fell in love with so much.

Terribly sorry to read of your delima, I will keep your little baby in my prayers.
I would not give any toy or article to a possibly infected dog, then use it on an uninfected pup, even though you may feel like you want to, distemper is not the only spreadable disease that can be carried. Best to sit tight, leave the pup where it is, if you bring it home and it does have distemper then you will bring it into your home, then you have the prob of whether it is safe to introduce a new pup, a minimum of 30 days as far as I know.

Well, we're not allowed to see Molly anymore, in case the disease is still "lurking", but do pupppies have been put to sleep in 3 days, and they've set a date for adoptiong (the 29th), so we THINK and HOPE she doesn't have the disease, but here's still the chance. But now, if she does, My hopes are too high, and I'm going to be much more dissapointed than before, not that puppies dying isn't already the saddest thing on earth.
