You will probably get 25 replies to your question. Most vets warn against bones because of the chance of splinters entering the digestive tract. They make a product where leg bones are cooked and become rock hard so no splinters are possible.
I personaly love giving my dog beef neck bones, knuckle bones, etc. It keeps them occupied for hours and in 25 years have never had any health problems as a result. Their teeth have not required any "vet cleaning" to remove tarter eventhough they don't eat dry food.
No matter what - it's your (& your dogs) preference.

never chicken bones though.. chickens are birds therefore have hollow bones, which greatly increases the chance of it splintering...

Never feed any cooked bone, they dry out in the process and splinter causing internal injuries. Any kind of raw bone is ok except for pork, that does the same without cooking. As already stated, raw bones are essential for keeping teeth clean and healthy, and in all the years I have had dogs I have never had any problems with them after eating raw bones, when you think about it, in the wild if they catch an animal they don't worry about what any professional says about the bones, they just eat it!!!
