My male Labrador whom I got as an adult was very timid, it has taken me 12 months to get him to come round to me, now he wags his tail violently at my greetings and pushes his nose into me, lately though he has started to gently nip my backside and grab my jumper sleeve in his mouth, he does'nt hurt but I was wondering should I correct him? he is still quite timid and I don't want to put him off, he is so well behaved in all other ways, is he trying to tell me something?

Why don't you try positive reinforcment as an alternative. For example when he first comes to greet you - give a down command. When he is laying down pet & praise him.

When he nips at you - clear you throat and walk away ignoring him. I think he is only trying to get your attention and if it doesn't work - he'll switch to something that does. Lying down looking up at you is best for you. I think just a firm -calm NO will work too.

It's not easy to be loved that much....

Thanks for replying DogLover, Wally is just adorable, I love him so much now, he doesn't jump up or go silly, he is very calm, he is fine when he greets me, it's when I bend over to get wood out of the wood bin, he comes up behind me, cheeky devil, but I will try just a quiet firm no, if I yell at all he gets very offended, and I am trying to build up his confidence not deplete it. thanks again
