It could be a number of things. What has your vet said? Are they also "biting" their fur or scratching only? Is it only in one area or all over?

I have heard of "hot spots" which cause the dog to scratch & bit which can be treated cool water & lotions. You know your dog best & what you tried - what do you think it is? Then we might be able to give you some home remedies.

Something really drastic - like removing the claws from the back feet would cure the behaviour but it is costly and painful for the animal.

This question has been asked before, it can be anything from an allergy to behaviour problems. I would ask your vet. You don't say if he is licking as well or just scratching.
There is something called Acral Lick Dermatitis, common in labs and doberman pinschers, but could be in other breeds, the dog licks constantly at one of a few spots till a sore develops.
It can be because of arthritis, skin diseases etc or behaviour such as anxiety.
Only you know your dog, if you think any of the above fits you could ask your vet about it.

I love my labs.

As the owner of two German Shepherds, I can tell you straight up...they have exceptionally dry skin! I NEVER bathe mine for that very reason! Also, they need a dog food formula that contains Omega 3 fatty acids. Allergies can be the culprit, too. However, you may want to look at what your dog is eating. Sometimes I give mine a small amount of tuna fish, or Salmon in oil added to there food. This bumps up the fatty acids they need for their coat and skin; especially during the Winter months!
