I have a 9 week old male Rottweiler. He is drinking water excessively and in turn urinates excessively. I have taken him to the vet and all his lab results came back normal. He said it was probably Psychogenic. Has anyone had this problem? What was done?

Ariel - my 3 1/2 month old did the same thing when we first brought her home. Drank more than my 110lb rotti cross. Still once in a while drinks lots.

I would just wait and see as I have heard they also drink more when they are under stress which in a new home away from mommy, etc. might be the case.

What about behaviourly. See my posting under training - does he do anything like that?

No, I really have not had any behavioral problems like that all. He has a great temperament and the best personally. The only problem is that he will drink tons of water, then urinate for an hour, then drink another bowl of water. We are trying to crate train him but he urinates in his kennel. We leave him out when we are home but urinate. It is very strange! The first vet we say said that he probably has a rare condition were he can't metabolize water? The second vet said it is probably Psychogenic but he was unable to tell us what we needed to do.

What is excessive? I was taking Ariel out every 40 minutes or so the first two weeks & she would go. She was still going in her crate the first two weeks as well.

What if you don't have water available for him what happens? (i.e. crate overnight)

He is only a little puppy, he won't have full bladder control till at least 12 weeks. I would give it some time, wait till he is a little older before you get too concerned.
