I have a friend who has a poodle with an on going ear infection. Her poodle, Romeo, is 12 years old and she takes excellent care of him. She's been told by her groomer to keep his ears dry. Her vet has her using a 50/50 solution of distilled water and vinegar rinse. He told her not to use peroxide even mixed with water because over time it can put a hole in the eardrum. She seems to be always fighting an infection and would like to know if anyone has any advice for her. Thanks in advance.

Tammy, does your friend put cotton balls in his ears when she bathes him? Clorine in the water can cause an ear infection if it get in his ears.

Prevention isncludes regular grooming. Be sure to pluck exess hair in the ears (it comes out very easily). Clean them often with the solution. Be sure to remove excess wax.

The problem with the drop ears and hair inside prevents any air from circulating inside the ear, which harbours the bacteria, some owners of dogs with this problem have even pinned the ears back for short periods of time daily to let the air in and heal. You can use a bandanna tied around the head incorporating the ears.
Also as stated, she must have the ears plucked regularly.
