Hey Everyone,
My dog is very aggressive...He is very well socialized but still does not like people outside the family...He barks and snarls at my neighbors when they are out in their yard...I wanted to know what everyones opinion on the shock collars were...Someone suggested it to make him stop barking at my neighbors who he sees everyday...I don't feel to comfortable using the collar..I feel it is cruel

I always say it depends on the dog and the situation. If your neighbors are willing see if you can get them to feed the dog its supper by hand with a wire mesh muzzle. See if they can do this a couple of times a week. Some neighbors love to help esspecially if it will stop the noise. If not I posted some options on another one like this in the training forum. I hope they help. I have had to use the shock collar for a few of my fosters but I try everything else first and I prefer the citronella ones. They spray citrus juice into the air in front of the dogs nose when it barks. It does hurt them and does work.

I owned a german shepard who barked (and howled)at everything for hours on end. My neighbor complained and in order to keep her we spoke to our vet. He surgically removed her voice box. She could still bark but it had no volume.

It's very drastic and I would probably try a lot of other things before I did it again.

But on the bright side, it did not affect her personality and after about a week of recovery there were no side effects.

There is also the option of a citronella collar that releases citronella scent when a dog barks- they find it very irritating. It's possible that you have a breed or mix that has a nature to protect and bark- hounds, workers, terriers.
