I had my dog to the vet recently..I was just looking at the papers...I noticed that he gave him every shot listed (rabies, distemper, parainfluenza, adenovirus 2, parvo, coronavirus, and leptospirosis)except for the lyme disease and cordetella. I know lyme disease is transmitted from tics ( I live in the Northeast and I don't think we have many tics). Anyone have any idea why he didn't give my dog those two shots? Could anyone explain to me what the bordetella is?

Thanks,
Crystal

Crystal, I also live in the Northeast and I can tell you from experience that we DO have a lot of ticks around here (I'm in Maine). I know that my dog has been vaccinated, she is almst a year old. I cannot say if she got it the very first vet trip, maybe they have to be a certain age? Is your dog just a puppy? I would look into, though. Especially if you live near the woods, OR if yor dog runs in grassy fields, or even on your lawn.... ticks are everywhere!!

Bordatella is also called kennel cough. dogs catch it from other dogs (a virus) and it causes respitory infection.

He probably gave a combo vaccine, that had all of the aforementioned vaccines in it. There are 5 como's and 7 combo's

It is common for vets to not inocculate against Lyme disease unless he's informed that the dog will be exposed to an environment that is higher risk.
I'm a little surprised that he didnt vaccinate against bordatella, although that also may not be needed based upon what your dogs environment is.. i.e. does it get boarded or exposed to other dogs. BUT if you are giong to board it, try to get him the vaccine a couple of weeks aheead of time. Its usually given through the nose - not a shot, its quick and simple.

while on the subject (somewhat)

Ive been using advantage for fleas, and iverheart for heartworm. To be honest I am not happy with either product, and will switch as soon as I run out. The advantage wears off quickly, and my pup hates the taste of the iverheart. Im going back to Frontline and Heartgaurd.

I did (almost 2 years ago) give some of my dogs that 6 month shot for heartworms without incident, however theres been alot of contraversy about it, so I went back to monthly tablets.

The "contraversy" over the 6 month shot hit close to home for me last summer. My parent's dog, an 8 year old Gordan setter died form cancer. We are all but convinced it was the shot.... it was within weeks of having it that he got sick. i also know of 2 other people in the area who have lost dogs and suspect it has something to do with the shot. At one point I had a link to a website that had posted the letter the Pro-heart 6 people had set out to vets.... FDA saying there were some "unexpected reactions" to the shot. Yeah, like death...

Sorry to go on and on about this...
My opinion, stick with the pills

I consider myself lucky to live in Alberta. Freezing winters & all. NO heartworm, few fleas, little lyme disease.

Mind you we do have to chip our dogs out of the ice every so often. (JUST KIDDING)

The only time our vet recommends heartworm treatment is if we are doing a lot of traveling.

Thank you for your advice everyone!! I live in town so I'm not really near the woods..The dog ripped up the lawn so I don't have one (its just all dirt now) So, I guess hes not really in too much danger in the lyme disease category..My dog is 2 years old..He was never boarded & probably never will be because he would die if we left him...The only time he was ever boarded was when he was neutered and that was overnight..His is not really ever around other dogs...

As for the 6 month shot..I was thinking about trying that myself but what I have heard so far I think I will just stick with the pills...I am sorry for your loss weimlover [Frown]
