My female weiner dog has been really red around her "doo-dad" since yesterday. She's been scooting on the carpet at lot, so I think it must itch.

I really can't afford to take her the vet unless it is necessary. I was hoping someone might have an idea what is wrong with her. Thanks!

You could try the following;

1) take clear water and wash the area.

2) evac the **** glands. What you do is pull tail high (you will see two bumps under the anus) Squeeze these gently. A clear - smelly fluid should come out.

3) apply a small amount of vaseline around the area and keep eye on her

Eww! She had to have her a n a l glands flushed out once, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to take her to the vet for that! That's a pretty gross experience!

I will wash her off and apply Vaseline for the time being, though. Thanks for your reply!

This isn't that bad.. really. Take paper towel holding it firmly against her bum. Use it to squeeze gently. Throw towel away. The key as described by my vet is pulling the tail high enough to get the glands to stick out. Get someone to help you by holding her up and steady. Even if you get a little fluid it's fine.

If you don't get anything they could be plugged. But the wash & vaseline should improve the the redness anyway.

Scooting is a typical sign that the **** glands are irrated. Increasing the fibre content in the food can sometimes help with this problem. In other words buy some really cheap food(it tends to be high in fibre) and mix it with her regular food.

When expressing the **** glands hold the tail up. There are two sac's one at 4oclock and one at 8 oclock. Simply press down and up, this will milk the glands allowing fluid to drain out. If you feel large lumps in those area, but cannot express anything out, then I would suggest you visit your vet for help.

its safe to feed her chicken and rice since thats low in fat and my vet prescribed that when my pup had the runs and had a swelling as well.
