I'm hoping someone might offer some advice. We have a 1 yr old yellow lab. We took her to the vet today because her back had become very, very sore to the touch. The vet shaved her back and turns out she has almost what looks like sores from a shotgun blast on her back down to her tail and even under her tail. The vet ex-rayed and this is not the case, and not a real possiblity. We talked about possible fire ants, but the amount of time she is outside and away from us, I would think it would be hard for us not to have relized they were on her; and the sores are mostly on her back in one area. She also had a temp of 106. The vet mentioned a very rare fungi infection that could be a rare possiblity. I know this is probably a shot in the dark, especially without being able to see it, but I'm looking for any advice or direction to look for research. We're taking her back in the morning to recheck her temp, but the vet is as bewildered as us at this point. Anyway, I appreciate any advice you guys can offer. Thanks

So sorry to hear about your pup.... it is as hard to not know what is wrong as it is to know the exact problem.

So, I did i search online for skin infections in dogs, and most seem to be bacterial and require a skin culture and lab testing. Here is something that sounds similar to what you are describing. Visit this page, and if this exact infection isn't right, look more, they have a lot of useful info at this site.

Is your pup scratching her back at all? You mentioned it was sore to the touch...

Hope this helps a little and keep us posted....
Good Luck

Thanks so much for the advice and the quick response. She is not scratching, the biggest area is her upper back where she can't reach to scratch. I'm going to do some more reading on the site your recommended. Thanks again.

Her back is looking much better, and her fever had dropped down by the next morning. We are still clueless on what happened. We live next to a cotton field and they had just sprayed. We were wondering if maybe she had rolled around and had an allergic reaction.

The vet gave her:
Dicural 136 mg - Give 3 tab once daily
Etogesic 300mg - give 1 1/2 once daily
Zn7Derm 2oz - spray twice daily

Which seems to be working. We are going to take her back in Saturday. I just wanted to update in case anyone else has a similar problem. Thanks.
