I have an 11 week old coc lab pup who is all of a sudden swollen up in the left eye and around the nose. Obviously an allergic reaction to something, but I dont know what to do for him. He is very uncomfortable. He is breathing fine, but while I have four children , dont know what to do for the poor puppy!
Its sunday, and the vet is closed.
Any help wpould be appreciated !
thank you very much
Leigh

Take a clean washcloth and wet it with cold clean water. Wash the area gently as well as possible to get the material off as best as possible. The condition if allergy should start to diminsh once the allergin is removed. Try to identify what caused the reaction. If pup starts having breathing difficultys or other problems, contact an emergency vet clinic ASAP.

Your pup could well have been stung by a bee, check for a sting, if it is still in there it will still cause reaction, if the swelling increases ring your vet, even for advise over the phone.

It is always my recommendation whether you have human kids or fourlegged kids you should always have pediatric liquid benadryl on hand.
Puppies have a bad habit of chewing on buzzing insects or sticking their nose in the wrong place. This animal will benefit from 12.5mg of benadryl every 8 hours (1 tsp of ped. syrup). If you dont have any it is well worth the trip to the store to get, because this will happen again.
Good Luck,
Dr.V

Dana welcome aboard. It's great to know someone with your background has joined the forum. I know we will learn lots & lots from you but hopefully we have some knowledge you will find helpful too. (even if it's just how crazy we are about our dogs).

Question on the benadryl - should it be used right away or only if puppy shows signs of severe swelling? If any of the rest of us would like to use is there a formula based on dog's weight?
