We just got a puppy, first pet, and he is constantly itching and scratching. His coat has white flakes in it and the skin looks dry. I took him to the vet and he didn't offer anything for treatment or solution. Any advice from anyone? Thanks!

How old? Is he/she shedding? Have you tried a bath? I wouldn't recommend a bath before 4 months but it flakey skin (dandriff) is common when seasonal shedding taking place. If it is just dry skin, you can try adding more fat in his/her diet. (Olive oil is excellent). If fleas, wash all bedding in hot water and treat area with flea treatment. Check labels to make sure your puppy is old enough to be exposed as some can cause brain damage if used on too young a pup.

If you can, try to give him some omega capsules (Salmon oil and Primrose Evening oil will do fine). They love to chew it. My dogs can’t wait to get theirs, they get very excited and inpatient if we don’t give quick enough! Salmon Oil in the morning and Evening Primrose before bedtime.

Helps for dry skin and makes their coats nice and shiny. This is also good for general health. [Big Grin]

Aliqu, I have a question about the omega oil, you give your dogs softgel pills to suck on? What size of pills? My husky/belgian tervuren mix has been shedding for a couple of months, at first we thought it was the seasonal shedding (change of winter coat) but it has not stopped. Everytime we pet her we get hair in our hands. The vet found nothing wrong except maybe the food being dry and her not having enough oil. Thank you!

I also give my dog oill pills. I give him cod liver oill pills and Flaxseed oill pills ( rich in omegs 3 & 6 ). It's works great for his skin and coat. I just put it in his food. Or do as my vet suggested a teaspoon of oliver oil in their food. Also work fine and cheaper. [Razz]
