My puppy had one when I got him from a rescue home. He was 4 mos old and the foster "mom" told me the vet would take care of it when he was neutered. She was right. It added $20 to the total and he healed right up. The stitches were removed at the same time as the neutering stitches.

Quite a common and easy operation, I have seen it many times in my circles, and experienced it a couple of times my self. Don't worry, he will be up and about in no time. The op has to be done or it will get bigger, then it can strangulate, then you would have real problems. To prevent this happening, when my dogs have pups, I am always present, I hold the cord, just at the belly button, between my finger and thumb, that way mum only chews down to my fingers.
