Hello! I am new here. Toby is a 6 year old Silky Terrier. Last night, after our usual walk, while brushing him, I noticed that one of his hind paws was all red. It did not seem to bother him, but I wanted to make sure that it's nothing serious..any ideas? Also, his diet consist of rice, chicken and carrots..with a greenie. Is that enough? Thanks

Have you had him long? Your dog should get a adult dog food. You can supplement once in a while with the food your feeding now but 70% or more should be a good quality dog food. Otherwise he may gain more weight than you want.
The red foot - do you believe it is a reaction to something. Did he step into anything abnormal. It just looks red, it's not painful, no pus, or other? My role of thumb is always to first wash any area with clean water and take a good look. Perhaps an insect bite? Treat with basic first aid and watch for a couple of days.

Home cooked meals would be better if you could ensure the meat you are given is free of any additives or medicines, in correct porportions of proteins, fats and carbs, and includes correct vitamins.
What was wrong with his skin before you switched? For most people - keeping it all balanced is just too much work and dog food is relatively inexpensive.
It's always up to you. But back to the red foot - is it still red? Did you check for insect bites?

A greenie is a vegetable. A for home cooked meals they are not particularly good as you can not really know what you are feeding and can not be sure your dog is gettting a balanced diet.

If you are looking for a healthy all natural dog food that many sensitive pets can eat check out the website www.frr.com. This dog food is called flint river ranch and it is the best dog food I have studied. My dogs love it and it is great because you order over the phone, internet or fax and it is shipped to your door for free and is VERY fresh. You may want to do some reading about it if you get tired of making home-cooked meals. ( I probably should work for this company for how highly I recommend it. ) You can always order a free sample to see if you dog likes it. Also, although Greenies are good for your dogs dental hygeine-I heard from a local vet that it is not good to give your pet one everyday. Something about a waxy build-up if consumed too much..?

As long as you are feeding the correct portions, you can add a supplement to your dogs meal to ensure he is getting adequate nutrition. Home cooking is a great way to go if you have the time and knowledge to do it.
As for the paw, it is a typical "allergic" reaction so to speak. You can try an additive called Solid Gold Sea Meal. It contains vitamins, minerals and probiotics to aid in digestion - that can help with the paw issue.
Good luck.

A "Greenie" is a treat for dogs that is green and is shaped like a tooth brush. It is for daily use to help keep teeth clean and gums healthy. There are several sizes available for every size dog. Most pet stores and online stores carry them.
I give them to my dog on a daily basis.

I haven't heard anything about a "waxy build-up" at all, but then, we do learn something new every day. Also, my vet does sell greenies.
I've been giving them to my dog every day for the past 8 months or so and haven't had any problems.
