Topic: Ariel's laser spay

The vet's office phoned ask me to reschedule Ariel's laser surgery to next friday because the vet was doing a demonstration of the laser technique and he wanted to use Ariel as a subject.
I agreed but kind of regret the decision because I had it planned that I would be home with her for a solid four days after she was spayed on Tuesday.
This is a routine procedure and the laser techique is supposed to be much better. I think it's great that he is showing others the equipment and techinques. This one piece of equipment cost over $75,000.00 and he uses it a lot for declawing cats because their is little bleeding - no wrapping and quick heal time.
Declaw procedures won't require the heavy bandages and would only have minimal post op bleeding.
So someone out there tell me that I made the right choice. PLEASE!.

I think that your decision was fine. If Ariel were and older dog, I would say "Eh, you probably need to stay with her for a while.." but, where she is a pup, and the laser surgery is less invasive, and, didn't you say in Canada that they will keep her overnight after spaying?, I think that she will be all set. Let me tell you how much I underestimated Roslynd after her spay. I thought.... she is going to be in so much pain and groggy and can't move yada yada yada, well, ....NOPE!! She was groggy for the first few hours after we brought her home (same day as the procedure, here) and then she was ready to go again!! wanted ot eat, we couldn't keep her still!! i was worried about her tearing stitches, etc. but she was fine..... it only took a few days until we were comfortable with her running, etc. It did swell quite a bit, and one one side of her belly more than the other, but she never was in pain or anything.... vet said she recovered beautifully!!
Anyway, I think Ariel will be just fine ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Doglover, only you would know that answer!!!, if the healing time is shorter, the stress on Ariel is less, and you can take her home the same day, you made the right decision. If she still has to stay the same amount of time, the healing is overnight (initally)ie: you can't bring her home the same day, like where you live, then you will know if Ariel can put up with everyone looking at her. Check out what they will want to look at, and how many, it is ok to ring them back just to find this out, they will understand, YOU are a loving and caring owner of your girl.
I have only edited because I wanted to add something.
My Sophie was not the kind of dog who could of handled too many different people, she is a one person dog, that kind of thing would of stressed her out too much, no mater what the kind of operation, only you know Ariel, if she is happy with strangers all will be fine, if she barks at strangers into your home, doesn't quiet when they come inside, I would reconsider.

If she ends up having trouble - I'll either take her to work with me or phone in & take a vacation day. This place certainly won't fall off the face of the earth without me.
& maybe Ariel can educate some new vets on laser techniques.

That is the plus side to it, cause they have to learn from somewhere, and if Ariel is pretty casual about situations, why not.
If it was my Ellie having it done, I would probably allow it too.
Give Ariel a kiss and cuddle for me, hope she goes well, keep us informed!!!

Ariel is very neutral but not submissive. Because of her size and condition they'll be able to see the procedure clearly. My boss loves her so if I was in the least concerned he'd let me bring her to work - but my 21 year old daughter is working nights so Ariel will only be alone for an hour or two.
As soon as she's old enough (January 2005) I am also signing her up to be a canine blood donor. That way while she's young and strong she'll be contributing to the health of other animals as you never know if one day you might need it.

In Canada the main canine blood bank is located in Winnipeg but there are storage facilities everywhere. NAIT here in Edmonton is a collection agency. You sign a contract promissing to bring the dog 4 times a year for a minimum of 2 years.
In exchange you get a free microchip and your dog is eligible to get blood if ever needed on a one to one basis on how much they contributed for free.
Whole blood is absolutely necessary for certain treatment like transfusions from rat poisioning, etc. Your vet must certify to the dog's health & disposition before they are accepted. The dog must be 1-8 years of age and at least 38 lbs.
Very worthwhile endeavor.

disposition? Iam going to look into that for sure. No problem with wieght at 5.5 mths he is a healthy 55lbs

If you're planning on doing this when he's old enought - you have to teach him a DOWN/STAY that lasts at least 5 minutes (that's how long the procedure takes).
My dogs love the vet and never even react to the needles so I know they will handle this.

Well they scheduled here back to today... In 15 minutes we're off.
When she comes home tomorrow all will be done.
I decided not to go and visit her there this evening because I think it might be harder on her to see me and then be left again and if I simply go pick her up tomorrow. Man.... I didn't worry this much when I went in for surgery.

She's home and sleeping. I don't really know if the laser spay is all that much better than the normal route. Costs about 115 more. There is little or no swelling around the incision.
She's not quite herself yet. Very vocal vs the dog I dropped off. Barking, growling in play all of which she didn't do before. But they do have her on pain meds (my vet went to a seminar & this is now the way to go?) She is quickly learning that isn't acceptable in my house.

Hi doglover! So glad to hear that she is back home and resting! and playing!! LOL
I'm sure her new vocality (word??? lol) is just because she missed you and wants you to know that she's back!!
First off: Don't be surprised if the incision swells within a day or so, and if it more swollen on one side than the other... totally normal and will go away, just keep an eye on it. That happened with Roslynd, all swollen on one side and not the other, I was sooo worried!!! I though an internal stitch had broken and she had internal bleeding!! (First time mom, what do you expect??!!) Second, they gave me pain meds for Roslynd, too... give her 1 twice a day.... I didn't do it. She seemed fine, rather tired when we got home, but other than that, okay. I didn't want to give the pills (Rimadyl)if it wasn't necessary... Ariel may not even need them, so, my advice, judge her pain, and give her the pills accordingly.
