I found a westie running down our street. No one has claimed it yet. I think it is prego or just had puppies. VERY FRIENDLY...i want to find the owners, but I do not want to call the shelters...no tag on the pup either.

Call the local vet they may know her ,or the local police may have recieved a call from her owners. You are great to be so concerned.

If you think she has just had pups it is essential you get her to a vet to make certain. I would contact the police, local vets and shelters to inform them you have found the dog in case some one has called them to report the dog missing. "Found" posters are a good idea too.

okay, I called the police departments and notified them. I called the shelters and left a found report with all of them. I emailed the news jjust in case and the newspaper. I have been down my street, but the people who i think it belongs to are not home. I am so glad my girls wear collars!

thanks.

Well, if you don't find the owners..well...westies are my favorite breed (well, other than any terrier with the word "bull" in its name) [Smile] And Texas isn't THAT horribly far away...so...give it a week or two, then e-mail me...I might not be able to take her in if you don't find a home, but if I could, I will...Unless of course you want to keep her to yourself [Wink]

Good luck with finding the owners! One of my cats ran away a few days ago, and it's HORRIBLE without her. The owners must be worried sick!

You will be able to tell if she has had puppies, check her teats for any milk...lots of milk:puppies, not much milk..either weaned or pregnant, she would also have a bloody discharge is she has recently had puppies..
I would take her to a vets, just to find out for sure, cause if she is pregnant and due soon, you will need to be prepared!!
GOOD LUCK in your search, and what a wonderful person you are to go to the trouble you have over a dog which isn't yours.

can't tell about the milk. they are not very swollen. Her tata seems to be enlarged. I called everyone cops, news, paper, shelters..we will take her to a rescue place Monday morning if no one has claimed her. My dogs have been sick, so i do not want to risk the other dog getting anything mine have.

That's one good thing, if she had puppies on her, those teats would be hanging down, probably pretty red by now, full of milk.
Enlarged vulva?? she could be pregnant.
If her owners are looking for her, don't worry, they would be ringing around too. You are doing the right thing taking her to a shelter, also you won't want your dogs to catch anything she might have, if they are both sick.

nope- she was just in heat....MY MISTAKE. Mine have never been in heat. I have mine fixed...so I have no clue. the owner was crying tears of happiness. It has been raining here so much that running water made a hole under the fence. She thought she might have drowned! SO, needless to say she was happy.

[Wink] my mom told me I did my good deed for the day, but it was just something I HAD to do.

Good job!!! Hats off to you! That westie was very lucky to have run into YOU! Many others would simply have left her at the shelter or pound.... GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!

That was a wonderful thing you did. My brother was visiting this week and his Maltese somehow knocked the back door open and left, in search of us, no doubt. When we arrived home my brother was frantic. Luckily, we found Beau a block away, soaked and filthy. Thank God we wern't gone any longer. I would have hoped for a good samaritan, like yourself, if we had not found his boy.
