Hi, I'm new to this forum, I have a 3yo male Bernese who is very skinny, he is (and always has been) fed on Nutro Large Breed Maintenance. I have recently had him to the vets who checked him over and ran extensive blood tests and found nothing wrong. He weighs around 54kilos (about 118 pound) but his ribs, shoulder blades and pin bones are very prominant. The vet (we have always used her and she is excellent) says that she can find nothing wrong with him, there is nothing wrong with him stools (no blood) and he's been wormed etc. Because of the breeds susceptability towards cancer I wanted to keep him on the Nutro because it has less additives etc than other complete food. Any ideas? I also have a Border Collie who gets as fat as a barrel on plain Pedigree Chum complete, but that has quite a lot of additives etc so I am loathe to change my Bernie onto it.

What not add some bone marrow or small amounts of meat fat as treats.
Many add a smaller mid day meal.

Well I am also a fan of nutro because of the lack of chemicals used and less additives I give my puppy marrow bones and he is lean but not as much so as you described if he is healthy I wouldnt worry to much but you can give him marrow bones and occasionally add yogurt to his food if he does not have a lactose intolerance.

I have one that is a hard-keeper. I generally try to force as many treats down her as i can. lol. only joking, she gets excess animal fats trimmed off the saturday morning bacon and is on a working dog mix rather than a pet dog maintenance. I think Nutro does a formula for working dogs too so you might want to look into that.
