My vet says they are a reaction of the dog's immune system and treats it with steriod pills.

Home treatment involves cutting all the hair back on the exposed area plus 1/2" all the around so the air can get at it. Then treat with first aid ointment.

They can if they can reach them. When you look at them they look wet and almost infected.

thanks for replies, took him to vet yesterday, she said she thought they were hot spots, shaved his fur off his neck, leg and tail, he was so not impressed with that, gave me 2 weeks of steriods, and antibiotics, and speical shampoo, and frontline, he seems much happier today, hasnt nibbled at his self at all to day, hope it works cos he wont want to go back through that vet door, again in a hurry, not after all that, mind you after paying £179,for the stuff nor do i. no only joking i would pay anything for his health. sue

I'm sure that will do the trick. You should notice actually healing within 1-2 days.

The bad news is that next year around the same time he may get them again. My old dog gets 1 bout every year usually right before it turns really hot.

Oh God! As much as I hate to say it, I am a pro at hot spots. I used to have a Pekingese who was allergic to gras, trees, pollen, flowers, dust mites, and I could go on and on and on!
My dog had to be tested fully by a dermatalogist and we had to give him allergy shots.
The vets told me for years that the only thing that caused them is an infected flea bite. (SO NOT TRUE).
The prednizone clears them up and stops them from itching. However, if your dog breaks out again after coming off the prednizone, be sure to take him/her right back to the vet. You can treat it at home but you can not cure it. You may be able to clear up the spots he has but he will break out with others. In this case he probably has a staff infection and lots of times get ear infections along with it. That's when the vet puts them on antibiotics also.
If I were you,I would check for hot spots anytime my dog scratched or bites at himself for it gets worse really fast and makes pets oh so miserable!
Keep them clean! Good Luck to you and your dog. I hope it isn't allergic to alot of things. Let's hope it's a food allergy or an infected flea bite, or rather caused by these.

I forgot to tell you that when my dog had hot spots, his dermatalogist said that I could bathe him every day with a dermatalogy shampoo that you can buy at your vet's office. Keeping them clean is very good for them.

Bobbyboy, you are so welcome. I went through years of this problem with my pekingese before taking him to a dermatalogist. Finally the vet said she had done all she could for my dog and it was time to get more professional help. They can only give them so much prednizone for it can cause lots of other serious problems on a long term basis. You might want to do a search on prednizone or staff infections. You'll learn alot, and if your dog has it now, chances are he will have it again at least at some time. Make sure you keep flea protection on your dog like Frontline.

I am from Virginia. Lots of dogs here have allergies and break out in hot spots from spring through fall. Alot of this is because that is when the trees have leaves and blooms, grass grows, people also use fertilizer, etc., flowers bloom causing pollen. My last dog started out breaking out in spring and summer. Then after a few years of that-it got to be a year round thing. I just hope your dog is one who only breaks out in the summer. This way it can be controlled pretty much so. This is how many dogs do. I have a shi-tzu who is 3 yrs. old. She hasn't had hot spots yet.
You may want to do a search on holistic vets or staff infections. You can learn so very much by reading on the internet. You also want to do everything you can to see that your dog is putting healthy food in his system. You need to keep up his immune system so he can fight off any infections or health problems he gets. (You know the saying, "you are what you eat?" That holds true to your dogs. You may also want to read about the shots your dog gets and some bring down the immune system. I wish I knew with my last dog what I know now. Oh well, at least I know it now.
Bob, you are certainly welcome! Hugs to you and hope you don't have any more hot spots this year!

That sounds good to know-that it isn't as common over there. I'll be glad to help you at any time. If I don't know, I'll say just that. There are some knowledgeable people on this forum and someone will always be willing to help. Has you dog taken all of the preds. yet? If so, how is it doing?

I have always wanted to visit France. From all I have seen in pictures, it's a beautiful place.

Hi Sue, preds. is prednizone (quartazone family). Probably is what your dog is taking. (little white pills?) It's good that they are working. It isn't good for them to stay on this medicine for a long period of time for they can cause other problems in your dog if he stays on it too long. Your vet knows this though so no need to worry. People take this also. My Dr. gave them to me for tennis elbow once. It cleared it right up. My elbow hurt terribly from not stretching my arm out while playing tennis. I was just learning how. It only took a few.
