Hi everyone,
I'm new here...lots of amazing information on so many topics!
Here is my question: What is better for my dog: Rawhide or Nylabone..or neither? She recently got sick (started with vomitting, then diarrea) and had to spend the night at the vet's for observation..pancreatic enzymes were super elevated! After more in depth blood work, which all came back negative, my vet said she had severe intestinal upset, which could have been caused by either the rawhide she had eaten the day before she got sick, or something she might have picked up on a walk...She is an avid chewer and I don't want to not give her anything, if possible. Just don't want to make her sick again! So..what is everyone's take on rawhide, versus nylabone...or is there anything else I should consider? Read a lot of posts on beef bones, but there is good and bad it seems with those too...My vet says every dog is different, some can take rawhide, others not...I think my Daisy has proven that she can't...By the way, she is a 10 year old australian shep...I rescued her about 6 months ago, so i'm still learning the ropes [Smile]
Any info would be GREATLY appreciated [Smile]

For her I would get a kong. Big rubber toy that can be filled with her favorite treats. IE biscuts, peanut butter, cheese, even someting we have here which is a rolled dogfood.

It would keep her busy without bits of it going into her digestive system.

I knew a big german shepherd/cattle dog puppy (10 months), and he had this little kong from early childhood, and those things are supposed to be indestructable, and then these people's JRT stole it and chewed hte top off! It was incredible. I've never seena dog be able to ruin a kong that fast, or at all. And the owner of the puppy was pretty pissed cause the kids with the JRT didn't keep thier dog from getting to other dogs' toys. All of the puppy's toys just kept getting stolen and they couldn't figure out for a while that it was the JRT :-P

But anyways, not all dogs seem to like kongs (my puppy doesn't really like hers), but my puppy LOVES something called a "bully bone". I don't know if that'd cause the same problems as rwhide, though. Also, I think nylabones mght be a good choice, htey're quite lovely to chew on (yes, I've tried it, it's addicting). I'd hate to not let my pup chew...there's gotta be SOMETHING out there for your dog to be fine with [Wink]

Thanks you guys! I will definitely try the kong! Since she absolutely ADORES her treats, that should do the trick [Smile] I gave her an edible nylabone, and i guess what scared me was that she was able to break it up into pieces within seconds...and eat some of those pieces whole, without really even chewing them! "They" say they are digestible, but i guess i can't be too careful, given how sick she was just last week! Kong it is [Smile]

TO Sambucca/Whiskey - your Kong cocktail - is that the equal of a meal or just a treat.

It is taken out of his ration of food, he gets 2 cups food in the morning a kong before i leave another kong when i come home mid day 1 cup food for dinner and a kong for bed he is lean and is suggested for size and weight 4-61/2 cups food a day so he does eat enough but not too much.

Vets say only nylabone are safe for dogs. Rawhide and beef bones (or others) can splinter in their stomach. I don't think you want to do that to your dog, nor do you want the vet bill!

i have only tried the edible nylabone....i'm also planning on trying the other one...the one that's for AVID chewers! Hopefully that will keep her busy for a while! I am already too familiar with the vet bills associated with rawhide, and am NOT prepared to start again...neither is she for that matter!
Thanks for the reply [Smile]
