My lab had 9 puppies on Thursday. All the puppies are doing great. However, last night we noticed that Jazz (the mom/black lab) was whining a lot. We watched her for a bit and she would be fine for a while, then would look at her hind end, whine, spin in a circle, and then lick the two mammary glands at the end. I looked at them and they are very warm and hard, whereas the others are rather squishy. Nothing comes out of them so the puppies won't nurse on them. It seems like Jazz is in pain from this. Could this be a case of mastitis? If so, what do I need to do? Since it's a holiday none of the vet offices are open. Any advice is appreciated!

Get a cold compress and place on the warm teats, when cold see if you can express a little milk, if it is mastitis the milk will come out yellow.
I forgot, Is she shivering and panting constantly, that is milk fever if so. [ July 04, 2004, 03:00 PM: Message edited by: ellierat ]
