Could be asthma, allergies, dust, even lung cancer. Is the dog overweight, inactive, etc. DOes it snore like a train coming thru the wall?
What does your vet say. He is a better resource than us because he can test for a variety of items.
If it's an old dog and only happens once in a while - why get worked up about it. It is increasing in length and frequency I would get it check out by my vet.
