Hi ..Bella was in our backyard on sat. nite with my husband, she watches him fish..she was sitting on the picnic table..A Beagle who got loose from his yard wandered in and Bella jumped down and proceeded to defend her terrritory by barking at him.He jumped on her and my husband dropped his pole and chased the dog off. He called to Bella and she came toward him but she was dragging her back legs.there was no bite marks or blood. We rushed her to the vet, By the time we got there she could stand, but not walk..its like her back half is dissconnected from the front..it goes kinda sideways and then she falls..They said it looked like a slipped or herniated disc and protocal for this was immobilization, and cortisone and iv.for 36 to 48 hours. We left her tearfully, and we were called back in this morning at 6 am . She is just the same after the cortisone and rest...The Emergency room vet said he is going to have a surgeon look at her..The x-ray showed nothing. She is arching her back though..Does anyone know anything about this type of injury...I would like anyones experience..thanks

Dogs are pretty tough. It sounds like your vet suspects spinal bruising. If so, it should start to respond quickly. X-rays would always confirm actual spinal damage. Have they taken any? The waiting period is a killer but a necessary step. Try not to worry too much.
If there is some improvement and no obvious spinal cord injury – there is another route to speed up recovery. NOW NO LAUGHING BECAUSE I’M SERIOUS. They have animal chiropractors that specialize in re-aligning our companions. Your vet may know of one or try the internet for your area. When my husband had spinal bruising he was off work for 3 months.
Even if there is some spinal damage – there may be alternatives. Let us know what happens. I’m sending along best wishes, hugs, kisses for a quick & full recovery.

My lab puppy had a very similar problem. Except he fell of the bed at about 9 weeks old. He got hung up between the bed and the night stand. He could not even get up the next morning. Off to the vet we went. Xrays showed nothing. Home we went with pain pills and instructions to bring him back if he didn't get better in 5 days. Back we went and still nothing showed an injury. 3 weeks worth of pain pills and a sedative this time. We were 4 days away from putting him down (my husband, the vet and I set a day for re-evaluating) he started walking. Slowly at first and only a couple of steps. Withing 3 days he was back to your normal lab puppy. I was always very nervous with him playing with our other two dogs, fearing he was going to re0injure himself. He played rough and hard and never had any more problems. So I wish you the same or better outcome. Hope for the best.

I had a pekingese with a slipped disk. It is very painful for them. Your dog should be doing much better very soon. You will need to keep it from going up and down stairs, jumping, running, etc. for a while though. I hope you have a kennel so you can keep him/her still for a while. That's what you'll need to do. Your vet will instruct you and probably give you pred. to bring home. Make sure to follow vet's orders. If you don't, your dog could end up with really bad problems and probably surgery. Hugs to your doggy! Hope it will be better soon.

My puppy's vet does acupuncture and is a chyrpractor for dogs. Our good friend has a 16 year old flat coated retriever mix, and she get's those from her once every couple of weeks. I really like going to see him, and he's so wonderful with the animals. You should really try finding one of these people, thy could really help your dog!
