Two weeks ago we got a puppy. The rescue home we got him from had towels and baby blankets all over the floors of the rooms the (many) dogs had access to. I don't think he was ever taken outside. We are not paper training but rather crate training. We were told he was about 10 weeks old but a trip to the vet established that he is 4 to 4 1/2 months old. He has definitely figured out that he gets a treat when he does his business outside; in fact he seems to have figured out that several little pees equals more treats than one big one. The problem we have is that he pees and even poops in his crate sometimes, even when it's only been two hours or less since his last successful visit outside. The crate is in our bedroom doorway but he doesn't seem to get that he needs to signal us somehow to let us know. During the day I have been home to take him out often. However, he has been known to "hold it" for four or five hours if he is sleeping/cuddling on someone's lap (his favorite thing in life.) So he must have SOME bladder control if he can do that. I always clean the crate well and finish w/ Nature's Miracle after an accident. What can I do to get him to hold it if he's not on someone's lap?

I agree with dawn that the crate could be to big. He should only have enough roon to stand up and turn around in. To solve the problem you can put a divider in. For example I am getting a german shepherd puppy in February. So I have bought an extra large crate for her to be able to sleep comfortably in when she is an adult. It is way to big for her now so what I have figured out is that putting a large laundry basket upside down in the back of the crate cuts off over half of the space and now her crate is the right size for her.

For teaching her to signal that she needs to go out I like this trick and find that both dogs and puppies learn it quickly. Tie a bell to a rope and tie it to your door so it is hanging down to the puppies level. Low enough so that she can paw it. Now ever time youtake her out side to relieve herself, only when you know she needs to go not when it is play time, just before youtake her outside pick up her paw and tap the bell so it makes a sound. Do this every time day and night. Soon the pup will learn to tap the bell when she needs to go out. I have known some puppies to learn in one week to do this.

Lets teach the public to spay and neuter pets and leave breeding up to the experts, to help decrease the thousands of animals destroyed monthly in shelters and pounds around the world.
