Over this weekend my buddy brought his dog over to play. My dog max is her brother but is drastically different in color, attitude and just about everything. My friends dog is aggressive at times, but not with me or my wife. Both dogs are two years old and my dog never messes with our cats. On occasion if one gets out he pretty much could care less. This weekend one got out and my friend’s dog brutally killed our cat. It was a real frenzy that was going on his dog was psycho. Max, my dog was about 20 feet away cowering during this. My buddy’s dog is no longer allowed over because of this, but should he be worried about further problems. This dog was out to kill this was no accident it was pure aggression and she was having fun with it. Now she, my buddies’ dog has been known to bark ant neighbors and stuff. I can control her, but obviously he can’t. She digs out of my yard and when he scolds her she was just wagging her tail and there was no follow though in the punishment.

I'm terribly sorry about the loss of your cat.

First, it sounds like your friend needs to get into some obedience classes. When we got our Newf/Great Pyrenees, my husband took her to obedience classes so he could learn the right ways to deal with a dog her size. (He had Poms before her, so it was a pretty big difference!)

We've had a couple very excellent, trustworthy farm dogs that had a problem with killing cats. Both dogs were terrific with kids, horses, and people. One was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the other was a lab mix, so I don't think it's a breed thing. We tried and tried to get the dogs to leave cats alone, and it never happened.

Opie, our youngest dog, chased our cats all over the place when we first got him. Finally, one quit running, and he had no idea what to do. Now, after 7 months, he doesn't even worry about the cats anymore. He only wanted to play, though, so it wasn't so difficult to get him to quit.

Some dogs will never become socialized with cats and need to be kept away from them. That doesn't necessarily make them bad dogs for everything else. (The Chessie helped raise my brother.) It sounds like your friend's dog is out of control, though, and killing cats is only one of its problems. He needs to get a handle on it.

Again, I'm sorry about your loss.
