Hi! Would you have any suggestions on teaching the down command? My pup easily got the sit-stay-come command but just cant get the down command! I tried putting him in a sit position then would slowly pull his front legs forward but as soon as I'd do this, he'd stand up and making it impossible for me to keep him down. I read that procedure in a book....anyone have another suggestion on teaching this command? He loves lying down but wont lie down on cammand [Confused]

Put your pup on a leash and grab a small treat. Put the pup on a sit. Take the treat and start at the nose slowly bringing it down towards the feet and then out to encourage the down. A soft pop down on the leash might be necessary. The biggest problem with the down is the pup is actually breaking the sit if he is standing up. Try placing your hand on his rump and give resistance if he tries to stand up. If you want your pup to stay on a down, get him to lay down first and then stand on the leash close to him so that if he tries to get up he is stopped by his collar and leash. Good luck

Our trainer had us put Vader in a sit position. I would show Vader the treat & take it down towards the floor. Make sure you are doing this close to him/her sort of between his front legs so he has to go down to get the treat. Once he is down really give lots of praise. Keep repeating this step. After about 30 or so times your pet should have it. After doing this awhile start staying the "down" command & your pet will associate the behavior with the command. Here is a link you might also enjoy. I've wanted to try some things on my own & am going to print these out myself. Good luck & let us know how it goes!
