I lost a dog today before he got hit by a car. I was wondering how you guys trained a dog to not go near the road.

My older dog, Teddy never goes near the road. He just.. never has for as long as I remember. My chihuahua is only outside to make a mess, or in the summer whenever I'm around. She's not really an outdoorsy dog (just has never been that way!). so she doesnt go near the road.

But we're getting another dog probably this summer, and the last thing we want is to lose another dog to a car. My parents have lived on this property their entire lives (well, my dad anyways) and he has lost many dogs to that road.

We tie our dogs, but in the winter we would just like to let them out quickly to pee, and right back in. Ya know what I mean? They are tied pratcially all the time unless someone's outside watching them. We just want to prevent another tragedy like this from ever happening again. [Frown]

--- Lazer, you will be missed forever. I'm sorry if I ever yelled at you for barking at me, I regret it! I love you so much! Oreo misses you :( 11/01 ~ 10/03 ---

As an englishmen I find this question strange, as our dog live indoors, and we have fences round our properties. So, my instant reaction would be why don't you just build a fence?. But I have also lived in New Zealand, and I know their are many types of farm/rural houses that are just located on spreadout grounds, and dogs live outside in dog houses. Is this the case in your area? If so, just do what my fellow Kiwis do, make a 'running line'. This means having a strong wire strung from tree to tree or suchlike. From this would be connected a very very long lead or rope, the other end of which would be connected your dog. If everything is long enough, your dog would have a good roaming area of your garden, while being safe and secure.
Much better than tieing him up or tethering him to a stake long term.

Have u thought about just fencing in or have a invisible fence around some of your yard? Then when u let the dogs out u they can only go so far. Also I think kiwi has a good idea on the running line. Good luck and i hope no more dogs get hit.

Yes I agree, I have one of those on my farm property as we have no real fencing, only your wire strands. One of my labs likes to take off, I only let her loose when I'm outside, other wise its the running line. [Smile]

I love my labs.

I was thinking of one of those underground wires that gives the dog a zap when they are near it. Know what I'm talking about? Maybe just a line by the road for a ways (until it's off our property) and that'll prevent the dog from going on the road.
What do you think?
