Hi, my yellow lab chews everything in site if he can get to it and we can't get him to stop he did have a bone and a chew toy to play with but he still chewed everything else. he's chewed wood off my bathroom wall in my basement and a bunch of other things like, shoes clothes and blankets we have him chained up outside right now and my husband is wanting to take him back to the pound cause he chews everything up plus we can't keep him in our fence he always finds a way to get out he has dug holes and forced his way out of the fence we put cement blocks where he dug the holes but he still gets out and since we have had him chained up he has found a way to push his way through the gate to get out my husband let him off the chain one evening and the first thing he did was got out of the fence and ran off but he came back like 5 minutes later and we can't have him running around town he'll get hit by a car we live right buy a busy street so the only option we had was to chain him up and my husband is so disgusted with him we thought maybe if he was nutered it would help does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get him not to chew everything and stay in our fence? Thank you Lisa Stuhr

Welcome to the world of labs. They are so much fun. Labs are naturally very active dogs. They are bred to be retrievers. A majority of bad behavior comes out of boredom. Chewing and digging are the most common. Depending on how much time you have to spend with him one on one, that is what will make a difference. Try to find out what stimulates his mind. Labs can do it all. Take some obedience classes that teach the basics. From there you can progress to activities such as agility, flyball, search and rescue, etc. None of this has to be done professionally. Just make him use his mind. And make him respect you. You need to effectively correct him for his unwanted behavoirs. And since it seems that he is quite naughty. Crate him. If you can't watch him, crate him. For your own sanity and his own safety.
Oh yeah, fix him. It will work wonders.
Good Luck and don't give up!

Gretajack is correct there. "Labs wouldn't have any other breed" I love them, but boy are they mischevious. Obedience is the trick, and they are very smart, one of mine can open sliding doors, even a normal door that isn't latched!! One day she took off and my male followed, we live out on a farm, so we looked for hours all down road, I stopped to ask someone if they had seen a yellow lab and choc lab. His reply: yes they were both just in my lounge room I had to kick them out. lol. that would of had to been sophie with the doors. You don't say how old your dog is, with training and age about 3, they settle down, ellie is inside now just laying under the bed, she goes everywhere I go, even for a ride in the car. have fun, and tell your husband he will have the best loyal dog, give it some attention, it will take to him like a 'duck to water'.

You can get crates just about anywhere. If you don't have a pet store close by check out petsmart.com or petco.com Also, I know there are other places on the internet so shop around. Ebay also has some listed.
My little boy Jack in 8 months old as well. Boy they can be a handful. I promise that it does get better. He is my 4th lab puppy in less than 4 years. If chewing is your biggest problem it is best to invest in some durable chews such as nylabones or kongs (but be careful. my labs destroy these) Fill them with peanut butter. I also get knuckle bones from the butcher shop. Keep a variety for him, it will keep him more interested in chewing the correct things. Good luck.

The jumping up is a real pain, my 6yo yellow does it all the time, I know she's excited to see me but she sends me flying too, she stops after the initial hello. Every Lab I got after her that was the first thing I tought them, DON'T JUMP, I just can't get it out of her though, tried everything. she will sit, go down, stay, but as soon as she can go, bang!!, she is really hyper, and barks a lot, needless to say the other 3 are angels. Ellie my favourite just had puppies, but I sneak her away from them while they are asleep (2 w.o.) but I just had to put her back so I'm alone again. Your lab sounds adorable, and when you have your baby they can be so protective and proud, just watch he does'nt try to retrieve him/her for you.lol. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Is Mindy a lab too?, Iv'e got mine everwhere around all the time, except Ellie, she is like your Mindy, I can't move, and if I go in the laundry where the cats' food is she won't touch it unless i say o.k. I gutted an old caravan and turned it into my welping room and she is out there most of the time at the moment, and the pups, I'm real bad, everytime they have a litter I want to keep one. I kept one of Sophie's last, her name is Annie. and Wally (choc) I got from someone, he was overweight and did'nt even know his name, his fur was all spikey, it has just started to grow into a beautiful shiny coat, and he comes to me and wags his tail, and want smooches now. i love him.

Hey Lisa! Has your lab got water to play in, I have an old bath tub in their pen, if I throw in an apple or pear etc. they will spend ages trying to get hold of it, and they splash about pawing at the water. I also tried the kong with peanut butter, annie went round half the day with it in her mouth, least she wasn't chewing other stuff. Will check your pics out now, trying to upload some myself at moment, just found a url. sue.

Mindy = Madam muck really cute!! A kong is a hard red or black rubber ape, with a hole in it, you put peanut butter inside and freeze it, cause the holes small they spend ages trying to lick it out, Annie won't put hers down, can get them from pet shop, about Aus$30.

Go to off topic, Ellierats first litter, I finally got the pic. up, and yeh, I love showing off mine too. Before you get that lab pup, have a real think about it, you are in for double trouble, I have 2 together in 1 pen they play, but they still do all that other naughty stuff, except theres two of them to do it together, twice as big a hole, twice as much chewed up stuff!!!! ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

I have a black lab/rotti mix. He did the same. I talked with the vet about it, and a dog trainer. They told me that he is paying me back for leaving him alone. I was home with him a lot in the beginning. He was 3 months, and we got him abandoned. I started college 2 months after I got him. I also took a full time job, b/c I found out I was pregnant. We came home to my husbands shoes being shredded. Trash was shredded. After my son was born, I quit work, but was still in school, needless to say most of my tim went to my newborn and not my 10 month old puppy. He started dragging dirty diapers out and shredding them. Nothing we did helped. I recnetly moved in with my in-laws. Since we have been here, He has not torn up anything!! He has me, my 1 1/2 yr. old and my in-laws giving him attention, so he is not alone much. Try to give him more attention, if you cant, well I hope he outgrows it. Good Luck
