I have never used this web site before, I don't know what I am doing yet, I hope it's right. I just got a puppy 6 days ago. She is a Shepherd/Collie mix. She's 13 weeks old now. Her name is Jersey. She has been going to the bathroom fine outside, most of the time. We've only had a few accidents in the house. Only urine though. But sometimes when we take her out for a half an hour or so, she won't do anything, but when we bring her back in the house, 20 minutes later she urinates on the floor. We tried the tie out, but she is scared to be outside by herself yet, so she just sits next to the house. So we've been standing outside with her just to get her to go potty. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to stop this? Or is it just a puppy thing?

Well, I'll tell you what we did with ours. We'd take her outside every 2 hours (she was 10 weeks when we brought her home) and would not come back inside the house until she went. Sometimes it could take 1 hour (or more) before she decided to go, but once she did it, we would praise her like crazy, making a big deal of it. Treats help a lot. I know it takes a lot of patience, but it is worth the effort.
When we are outside, we don't talk to her or play with her, just hold her on the leash until she goes. Only after she goes, we praise and have lots of play, so she realizes that when she goes the fun begins!
Something that helps a lot is to feed them on schedule, so you start learning exactly when they have to go. Pick the time you will feed and stick to it. Leave the food out for about 15 or 20 minutes and then take it away.
I hope that helps. One thing....lots of patience!!!!!

One more thing, try to avoid the accidents in the house, so she doesn't think it is ok to go inside.
Watch her body language (sniffing, turning around fast, etc) and if you catch her in the act, clap or make a big noise so she stops doing it and take her outside right away so she finishes there and then praise a lot. When they are that young you should keep an eye on them ALWAYS.
If you don't catch her, but find the puddle after, don't even bother saying anything to her, she won't get it.
Let me know how that goes.

It may sound silly but I took my puppy out every 50 minutes or so for the first week. Even then it took a while for me to read her. The only accidents were pee (just a little) which was her sign that she was ready to poop. Putting the dog in a crate when you can't watch them is also necessary to quickly train them. Use a command word "GO PEE" and keep repeating it until they pee. This way when they are an adult you can get them to go especially if you're traveling.

Your pup isn't understanding what she is suppose to do outside. Nor where she is suppose to go potty. I taught my dogs to potty on command but it does take a world of patience and some pups take a lot longer than others, just like kids, so don't get discouraged. I had never had an acccident after 4 months old and one that still was confused at 10 months. Eventually, your pup will figure it out. And it will get easier once this Wisconsin weather cooperates a bit more.
