Topic: Invisible Fence Questions

I was hoping some of you could give your opinions on those underground electric fences. We like to spend a lot of time gardening outside in our yard and like to have our puppy Chester (7 mos) with us. He hates being tied up (barks and yowls the whole time, even when we're in sight). When loose, he's been known to take off after anything that moves and a few things that don't, ie squirrels, neighbors in their yards, whatever. A regular fence is out of the question for us. Do these invisible fences always work? My fear is that if it doesn't work for him, we've spent hundreds of $$$ for nothing.

Hey there neighbor, I probably live less than 10 minutes from you in the large burg of Eldorado. I do have an underground fence for my labs and I love it. They do work if you train the dogs correctly. They are not foolproof by any means. We use our fence as an added security measure since we live on Hwy 23. We do not leave our dogs unsupervised outside. The 2 labs we have now are doing wonderful with stay within their boundaries. I will warn you though, a dog will break through if they have their adreneline up. You need to make sure that your dog is very reliable on a recall/come command. Also, your dog must be able to take a shock and get over it. Some dogs become petrified to go outside in fear of a shock. Alot depends on their personality. Any more questions? Hope I can help

Before we got our dog, we asked a pet shop owner about the underground fence... and she was against them. She said there are a lot of dogs that are resistent to the shocking... that it will not even bother them, thus you have wasted your money... is this true?
We have been looking at houses and once we buy one, we are debating what kind of fence to put up... I read about the underground fence when I used to buy the Dog Fancy magazine and it always interested me...
Is it a wise investment?

Like I said, I really depends on the dog and how well they are trained to respect the shock. I did lose two the broke chasing a cat. The two that I have now won't take a shock if their life depended on it. Now we got to work on our new one that we got. A dog can become tolerant and immune to shock training so please talk to an expert trainer if you are thinking about using any form of shock training.
