Hi, I have tried everything for my 9 month old schnauzer Luna not to pull on the leash. She is getting better, but I find that she still needs a lot of work. Besides that, she does not like kids and gets very yappy when she sees one. I have heard about the halty, but am not sure how it works. How do I use it? Will she always have to wear it? How long does it take her to learn?
Any comments are appreciated!!

Tried one & the effect is immediate but when you stop using it - behavior seeps back. As for the kids, you should try to get them use to each other but if it's only barking not aggression you need to decide if it's worth the extra training as it doesn't sound like you have children

I think you should look in to it... have you used the gentel leader? that works good too. Also it sounds like she just needs to be around kids more.

Haltis are great. If nothing else has worked to stop the pulling. It must be used correctly though. Please get someone to show you how to use it as if used incorrectly can cause damage to the dogs neck or spine. Also I would suggest you see an animal behaviourist about the kids thing. Sounds like your pup needs some desensitization there. remember your dog doesn't have to learn to like kids. Just how to behave around them.

The Halti or Gentle Leader, both pretty much the same work by putting pressure on the nose rather than the throat, as the nose is very sensitive your dog reacts immediately to the pressure and learns not to pull. But as stated, once not used the behaviour can revert unless you reinforce with other training and don't rely on the Halti for permanent lead walking methods.

Halti or a gentle leader is just like a halter on a horse. Think about trying to get a horse to walk nicely while you are holding on to a rope looped around its neck then think about using the halter. I'll second what ellierat says Sometimes, now that my 'puller' is used to her halti, I will just put it on, but hook her leash to her normal collar. She doesn't know the difference, walks nice, and I don't have to worry about it. Take it off, and she's right back to pulling. A word from the voice of experiance - people might think that the head halter is a muzzle and they'll steer clear. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) [ April 13, 2004, 04:51 PM: Message edited by: Brattina88 ]

I have a few questions: where do you get these haltis? Do they have them at a regular pet shop?
And how easy is it to do damage? I wouldn't want to risk hurting my dog.
Thanks!

my dog pulled uncontrollably to the point where walking him became a nightmare. I purchased the gentle leader for 26.99 at a Petco and tried it for a day and a half. He fought it and fought it until he chewed through it when I turned my head for one second. I gave up and went back to a regular collar and once again torturous walks. Believe it or not I went back to my local Petco and purchased another gentle leader for 26.99. (based on this discussion, I probably should have purchased the Halti for 7.00 less!!). I have decided to be consistent and luckily for the past two days, it has worked like a charm. He is not fighting it as much this go around for some reason and it is a miracle!! I literally can hold the leash with a pinky!! It's an amazing invention and would highly recommend it. Does anyone know how long it will take until I will be able to switch back to the regular collar/leash combination?

You should be able to get a halti from petstores or your vets. I'm not sure about any where else in the world as I'm from NZ. Damage is done if you use hard jerking with the lead while using the halti. There is a booklet on how to use one in the pack. Or ask the person you buy it from for advice and fitting.

Good thing my puppy doesn't pull on the leash. She doesn't even walk in front of me. She either walks behind me or she will stop and sit down.

What is the difference between the gentle leader and the halti? Which is better?
