Hi everyone:
I have two questions.
1. My lab likes to jump on people- whoever comes by to say hi to him, he would jump on that person. I feel annoyed because he is out of control when he gets hyper. What can I do to stop him?
2. He likes to pick up tissue paper from the trash can and eat it.

You & your dog would be a lot happier if he had some training. They love it & its fun. Around here it costs about $80 for 6 weeks. I went once a week. If that isn't possible there is this cute website I found a couple months ago. Our dogs are so smart! We have a Great Dane (11 months soon) & he still like to jump sometimes. But you have to be persistant. They will get the hang of what we are trying to teach them. Our trainer said repetition & positive reinforcement along with lots of treats & praise!Give them a try & see what you can do......Good Luck. Here is the link to the trick website: You will probably want to start with the sit command & go to your spot first.

My website inspired by Vader (Bow Wow Beds):

I will definitely give a try. I hope my lab can do as good as your Great Dane. [Smile]
Thanks

Have s couple friends help you. Let them help you train him. When they come over have him on a leash. As soon as he even thinks about jumping a very stern no and a downward pop on the leash. Having labs I know this might not be super effective (depending on his age). If that doesn't work, prepare for the arrival of you "guest" by having you dog sit close to the door. Step on the leash so that it is tight. When he tries to jump he will be stopped by the short leash. Try this repetitively with the same person until he makes no attempt to jump anymore. THe next step would be to try it with some one new. They will quickly realize that jumping means a sore neck and hopefully (fingers crossed) will stop. Good Luck!

Gretajack is correct with that training method, also never allow your pup to jump up for anything, even food, cuddles etc. always make him sit.when you feed, Sit, when you stroke, Sit, Labs take ages to grow up, and can get really silly around 6 or so months, it's like there are butterflies upstairs, the lights on but nobodys home!! Then all of a sudden they grow up (with training) to become this wonderful, loyal, lovable companion. You need to stop any bad behaviour NOW, don't wait, they don't grow out of it, they just do it BIGGER.

Forgot, the tissues, well what can I say, they will eat anything, they are retreivers, they have to have something in their mouths, you can only train NO to the bin, but if a tissue is on the floor he will eat it, and probably anything else chewable too!!!And No I haven't been able to stop mine, oldest nearly 8 still does this.

Retriever eats everything... [Smile] Sometimes I questioned if they have taste? I mean tissue paper certainly doesn't taste good. Treat, apple, eggs, dog food supposed to taste much better than tissue paper or some bird's feces. I wonder if my lab even know what taste good??
Regarding jumping problem. I will keep working on it. We live in an apartment complex. He always walks around with me but still gets so hyper to see people, even to those who just walked by. Once we brought him to a public flower garden and he went wild.
I wish I could take him out one day without wrestling with him

I wish I could take him out oneday without wrestleing with him.

Chocolab you are right about the taste, my labs tastebuds never get to try the food they eat, it seems to go from bowl to stomach bypassing the tongue altogether. lol.
How about joining an obedience club, it will get your dog out and famailarized with both dogs and people, could settle down the hyper heaps.
The hyper will go on and on, some of it is in the breeding unfortunately, the calmness of labs seems to be slowly disappearing and the hyper comming into them.

To everyone else.
And Pleaasse if you don't breed labs don't get into the last comment, I know what I'm talking about.
