Hi everyone,
First off, I'm not too keen on having my puppy in a cage while I'm at work, but everyone tells me it's the best way to house train him. I kind of feel bad for him though.
Here is my situation:
I just bought an Airedale male puppy. First week, he spent his days in a cage and at night while everyone is sleeping also. At night as during the day, he didn't "poop" in his cage. Yay!

Second week, brought him to the vet to have him castrated.
When I brought him back home, since he was clean at night, I started letting him sleep on my bed at night. During the day I continued with the cage. Now on several occasions he "poops" in his cage and I get home, it's all over the cage and dog! What went wrong between binging him to the vets and now? Help!!
I really love my pup and don't want to get rid of him, but I have to know if there is a good ending to this problem. Any suggestions?

You don't say how old your puppy is, they don't get full bladder control till 12 weeks at least.
If you have poop in the crate, you are not letting him out often enough, you may be feeding too late in the day, then crating, they can only hold onto it for a max of 3-4 hours, give a bit more detail. Feeding times, age, time in crate etc.

I love my labs.

Dont know if this applies, but if your crate is too large you may also consider getting a smaller one and increase the size as he grows.

My dog is a 3 and 1/2 month old Airedale
I feed him at 6am, then crate him at 7h30 am, go home at noon, then recrate him at 12h45 pm and finally arrive at 17H00 pm, feed him and then let him roam in the yard and play.
When we are home, he's never crated and sits in front of the door when he has to go out to do his buisness. At night he sleeps on our bed, at the foot, and never wakes up to ask to go outside.
So I can of consider him to be pretty clean.
For the last three days he's been "pooping" in his crate in the first part of the day.
I reduced the size of his cage, but he still "pooped". I'm going to try and change his food to a better quality (ex: Natural Choice), they tell me that since it is a better quality, more of it is digested and then less of it is "pooped".
Do you guys think that the fact he sleeps in our bed at night, makes him think that that is his bed, and therefore does not "poop" there, but since he doesn't spend the night in his cage, he doesn't consider his "bed" so then it is alright to "poop" there? (Desperatly trying to find reasons here! haha). Maybe I should start putting him back in his crate for the night?
Thanks so much for taking the time to try and helps us out everyone!
Steven

You don't tell what the rest of the dog life is like: what about exercise? Do you go on 1/2 hour or longer walks with him faithfully every evening? Does he get to romp and play outside? What training are you doing for obedience?

It sounds like you love your dog. But your dog is a wonderful outdoor lover, so will need to get out with you to enjoy it together.

It also sounds like you are experimenting on your own. Don't do that. Get your vets advice about food and your situation. Read books on raising dogs. I don't think any of them go along with much of what you are relaying here. 3 1/2 months is too early to neuter. Wait until 6 months. Ask your vet about that. Have you been going in for regular vet visits and shots?

The rest of my dog's life, I think is pretty good. We have a 3 year old daughter who loves him, and loves playing with him. So we're pretty much outside all the time when we're at home. We live in a woodsy area, so I often take him walking in the woods (hope to bring him hunting one day). So he really has lots of time to play and run, from 5pm to about 9pm and all weekend.
The neuter part was suggested by a vet as was changing his diet. We're starting obedience school next saturday.
What I tried yesterday was; I had bought him a little bed, to which he has taken a great liking to, so yesterday afternoon (after picking up his poop in his cage, I put him in our kitchen with his little bed and his toys, blocked off the kitchen so he couldn't get out, and left him with some music for the rest of the day. When I got home at 5pm, there was..........nothing! No poop and no urine!. Needless to say everyone in our house praised him all evening! haha.
So today, I decided to try that again this morning. I'll be going home for diner, to check and let him out to play 20 minutes. I'd rather just pick up a little poop on the floor than give him a bath for a fourth day in a row! haha.
Well, I'll let you know how today works out, and if you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate them.
Thanks

Oh and also, he has had all his shots at the vets the and stool samples were ok.
So he seems in pretty good health.

Well,
Had him closed up in the kitchen all day yesterday
Got home at noon.......no poop, no urine!
Got home at 17:00........no poop, a little urine
No bath!!!! yay!
I was pretty early outside with him, so he had alot of time to eliminate.
Trying it again today.

It sounds like things may be getting under control. Just stay in your routine. your puppy is going to have to get use to it. He's still young and will get better urinary and bowel control as he gets older.

Good luck sander

Sounds like you have solved your own problem. When I first started reading, I was going to suggest that you do just what you did.

WAY TO GO PUPPPY!
