I didn't properly introduce my pup in my last post, so I'll do it here. His name is PourSISTAnCE's Pretty Pupstar. (PourSISTAnCE is my sorority line name! LOL!) I call him Po for short. To avoid confusion between "Po" and "No" I always say "No Sir."

Here's my issue. My puppy - going on eight weeks old this Friday, we think - is definitely a people person. He is TOTALLY out of control with kisses and wagging tail whenever he meets anyone new. I like to think he's this way because I love on him so much that he thinks all creatures that look like me are playmates. However, when he gets around another dog, he runs. That is, if the dog is bigger than he. I'll be taking him to puppy classes starting next Monday to try and socialize him that way. We've been EVERYWHERE that we're allowed to walk together: Home Depot, Restaurants, Parks, Downtown streets, etc.

Actually, let me rephrase...if a big dog comes up to him, he shrinks behind me for a second, but if the dog is nice to him, he'll come out for a sniff. BUT, if the dog growls or barks at him, he runs away. Is there anyway to help him with this at such a young age?

It's very normal for a puppy or little dog to be apprehensive when meeting bigger dogs. Just keep at it, as long as he doesn't start growling or snapping at them even when they aren't doing anything, it is normal and he will probably outgrow.

Yes, pick him up so he is at the same level as the bigger dog, and has you for comfort.

Just ignore this apprehensive behaviour.Picking the puppy up will only make him more fearful. You should try not to make a fuss when your puppy is scared or it will think that it really has something to fear and thats why your reassuring it. Like doglover said it is normal. Your puppy is so young still. Your puppy is coming out and having a sniff of the other dog. That is good. He will soon learn that it is ok. Just remember socialization is important. And when you can take your puppy to a puppy preschool preferably at a vet clinic if it is to be done before the pup has finished getting its vaccinations.

My puppy was apprehensive at puppy school he was the youngest and smallest. My trainer had me crouch down legs spread giving him a safe comfortable place while watching other dogs interact.
This does not include codeling he only got praise when he went to play and came back happy not fearful.
Dont force your puppy let him know you are there you will kep him safe and PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE when he goes out for a sniff or plays.
