My boy has been living between the dining room and kitchen where he has a little "playpen" and his crate to sleep in. I crate him most of the time, but sometimes when I'm working and don't want to worry about him, I put him in the "playpen." When I say, I crate him most of the time, I mean when the time calls for crating or going to the "playpen." Otherwise, we're playing, socializing, eating, etc.
The problem is that recently when I put him in his "playpen" he starts barking like mad. Because I live in an apartment, I have to yield to him and move him into the bathroom until he's quiet. BUT, now he's going into the bathroom and quieting immediately, even playing or sleeping in there. Could he prefer the bathroom to the kitchen???

Does the bathroom have tiles? It could be that the floor is cooler there and he likes it.

Both the kitchen and bathroom have the same flooring, linoleum. I'm wondering if the smell of all the food in the kitchen is overwhelming his nose. Could that be it??

I would think the food smell would make it more attractive not less. Could be a variety of things, especially if the bathroom doesn't have windows while the kitchen does, etc.
My little one sometimes goes behind a chair to sleep for no reason. Maybe your guy is just waiting for you to move him so he can go back. They can get pretty sneaky that way.

i'm experiencing exactly the same situation. he starts to go mad whenever i put him in his playpen to sleep but unlike u, i do not yield and let him bark until he stops, which can take 30min-1hr! I also live in an apartment but luckily my neighbors have not yet complained during the afternoons, he's free to roam around the house as we always cuddle and play. I always presumed he just wanted to follow me everywhere and he has started sleeping in my bathroom even if the tiles are the same as the kitchens. I would presume its coz he feels he's still with me even if hes in the bathroom since its in our room instead of in the kitchen which reminds him of being crated or confined to his playpen. But yes, they love tiles that are cold. Is your bathroom inside your room or atleast near it?

I moved him and he's doing well. It must have been the kitchen! It does have one window, where the bathroom does not. I also put a little nightlight in the bathroom so I could turn off the main light and close the door. It's like a little den in there. The bathroom and kitchen are pretty close to my room since my place is very small.

Keep your finger's crossed, he might just be seeing how far he can push you but hopefully he just wants more security.

He could also have been trying to get closer to you, if you spend more time in that area of the house than the kitchen that would be a natural thing for him to want to do. I can't go anywhere in my house without Ellie behind me, even the Loo.

UPDATE! Now that he is moving along in potty training, I'm bringing his crate into my bedroom. Tonight will be the first night and we'll see how he does. I have a feeling he'll be much happier now! My vet recommended this to me today.
And speaking of the vet, Po is "the picture of health." What a wonderful compliment for a new puppy mom!!!!
Good luck to all other puppy moms - it's not as easy at it may seem!!!
