That behaviour is not breed specific. Some dogs especially when they get older don't require a fence but under 2 years of age, it's likely to take off.

an entire male will wander as will a female in heat. Some neutered males are prone to wandering as well. Some breeds are more prone than others (collies for example rarely wander - except entire males)

I have 3 dachshunds and have never had a problem with them woundering away from the yard when they come out of the fenced back yard. They are very loving animals i just got my 3rd one last week he is almost 4 months old, my other 2 are 1 1/2 and almost 6 years old. If you teach them to stay near you then you should not have any problems. Mine will walk away from me only so far and will look over at me to see if im watching them if they get to far away i will clap my hands and they know they have gone to far, they like to test me on occation. My husband and i take them to the park every night so they can get a good run in before dinne, they have learned not to get to far ahead of us about 30 feet, then they wait for us to catch up. [Big Grin] Good luck with the new puppy. [Smile]

Quite the size difference. My condolences for your loss of the shepard. Looks like he was a great friend.

The other two are amazing. You can be very proud. I like the little guys but have always had a weakness for the big german breeds. Like my little rotti.
