I have tried every trick I know to get little Ariel(she's 4mths old) to speak.
I have held a treat so long she actually became bored and lay down.
Does anyone have any tips for me to try?

Have you tried 'speaking' to her as you hold the treat?

Talk to her in a really excited voice and get her all excited about getting the treat... that way when she doesn't get the treat she'll bark at you. Good luck`~!

Does any of her toys get her all excited? Like waving a ball in front of her. This was a frustration I had with my german shepherd. She was not food orientated so I had to use toys instead of treats.

Find something you KNOW she'll bark at, then when she sees it give her the command to speak and praise her when she does. Take her away and immediately repeat the command to speak (in excited voice) and hopefully she'll get the idea. Thats how my dogs learnt. An evening with really long shadows is great cause dogs love to bark at shadows and then its not teaching her to bark at the postman or anything else she shouldnt. My dogs also like to bark at fast-flowing streams and the waves on the beach. Lou

Im so envious of all of you who have to actually teach their dogs to speak I would want to know if theres a way to make your dog NOT speak? My pup just constantly barks when I leave his side and also barks really squeeky loud when he plays with my other male pup. Is there a way to teach them to keep quiet?

To be quiet - try putting your hand at the top of his noise and whisper "listen" (then **** your head as though you are trying to hear something). Mine will even hold their breath for a second or two.
Both my dogs now don't bark at much. Their isn't really anything that sets her off. She puppy barks at the older one when the older one has something she wants and I have tried praising & reward but she still dosen't get it.

some are natural learners, others just don't get it, I taught Sophie how to open doors, to let herself in and out of the porch, but do you think any of the others can do it... NO, it can be frustraing as Sophie goes in, Wally follows behind, then Sophie gets back out, Wally doesn't make it before the door shuts and sits barking till I go and let him out, FRUSTRATING ![[Mad]](mad.gif)

It's so strange because she's way above the curve in the rest of her training. She's got sit, lie down, shake a paw, hi-5, stay, leash trained, give kisses--all down pat. She responds correctly to "drop it" and plays nice bringing her toys to you.
Toss a treat for her to catch - bounces off her head everytime. Hasn't got a clue to open her mouth.
Same thing with speak - just sits there and looks at you like you're nuts. She's not very vocal yet, but she's only 4 months old so it might just take more time. [ May 12, 2004, 04:54 PM: Message edited by: doglover ]

lol She will get it doglover. Blaze is the same with catching a treat. Bounces off his head. Sometimes he does open his mouth but its after the treat has hit him.

All good things come to those who wait!!! Today she caught the treat in her mouth. First one may have been a mistake but the next 10 that went in confirm that SHE GETS IT.
Now all we have to work on is SPEAK and maintain what she's already learned.
