instead of using a crate, i just put my dog in a leash, enough to move around her small dog bed... and i tried taking her out after snack, before sleep, every hour, in the morning.. and i thought it worked great... for a while! apparently, i was fooled completely! my dog has been urinating in her bed!... the bed was a two piece set.. a cusion and a sponge frame. well.. the sponge worked very well! when i lifted up the cusion.. the sponge was all wet under the cusion! the cusion was great too, because it was very dried! i'm afraid she will continue to pee in her bed... what can i do? she rarely urinates in the newspaper.. she waits to go outside, but occasionally, she urinates in her bed. This is her second time. i had to throw away the last bed.. and i got her a brand new bed yesterday.. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) [ May 12, 2004, 11:40 PM: Message edited by: Armyguy ]

How old is your dog? Does she wet her bed when you are not home, or when you are there?HOw long is she left alone during the day Can she get off her bed, or is she tied so she can only stay on her bed? If she is a puppy and is left alone for a long time, and can only move around on her bed, then that is where she is going to pee. Have you taught her to let you know when she has to go out, or do you take her when you think she has to go? From experience, it works a whole lot better when you teach them to tell you! Continue your regular "potty schedule" with her, but as you are getting ready to go out the door with her, make a big "fuss" ask her if she needs to go out, teach her a signal so when she needs to go she can let you know..... mine uses a bell attached to the door knob.
Good Luck! Housebreaking is one of the hardest parts of having a dog

Thank you for your advice. I is about 4-5 years old. well, she was kept outside for last 3 years, but then, i decided to keep her in my room since i have more time to take care of her. i usually take her out every 1-2 hours in the morning and in the evening. In the afternoon, my sister takes her out once or twice.. but no longer than 3-4 hour period. I do put her on a leash, but long enough to reach her food & water bowls, and some newspaper areas, just in case of an emergency. I did make the mistake of screaming at her before... So she gives me the "i've messed something up.. i'm sorry" look when she made a mess somewhere... thats how i knew she soaked her bed. She suddenly would not respond to me.. so i began checking the carpets and finally her bed.. thats when i found out she soaked her bed. well, i've been using the "treat" and "timing" method.. if anyone has better idea.. let me know. thanks again

Your dog is not housetrained, you need to start all over, and you probably have scared her, she will look upon it a something wrong, you will need to build up her confidence, I would discard the bed for the time being, confine her to a small area, and start housetraining, when you have done that reintroduce the bed, hopefully she will get over peeing in it once she has full confidence and training.

I'm not a big fan of leaving a dog on a leash to restrict it's movement. You don't really say why you want to change from an outside dog to an indoor dog but it's pretty drastic.
Your dog is used to going whenever - whereever it suits them. If possible I would try to bring in the house only when you're with them to start. IE in the evenings and leave outside when you're not. Slowly over the course of several months - make it more inside time than out.
It takes a lot longer to re-train than to initially train so you need double the patience but I would get rid of the leash indoors and use a bathroom, basement or other area that can be blocked off and mistake proofed.

I agree, ellierat, the dog is not housebroken, and he is going to have to start over. Armyguy, I really would recommend a crate.... most dogs do really well with them, it becomes their haven and can also be a lifesaver for you! Also, dogs do much better with positive reinforcement, (i.e. a treat and praise for doing right)rather than punishment (yelling, etc.). Don't give up, I'm sure that all your dog wants to do is please you, so give her a chance
