I really enjoy the forum when I have time to read it. Anyway, my question is...

What do I do when our 4 month old pup pees in her crate. I have not found any advice as to what to do when the crate is not too large, I have put her food in there, I make sure her water is limited and she is empty before we leave. We have a lady who lets her out to pee and play twice a day.

I am afraid she is ok with sleeping in her own waste or will become ok with this.

p.s. Every night I spray the crate with vinegar and water and rinse it out. I change the towel in it and we wash her bum so she does not smell.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I had the same problem with my puppy when she was that age. We never put food/water in with her and she was always let out every few hours during the day, but she peed every time!! I can tell you what cured it for us, but it may not work or even be feasible for you. We stopped putting her in her crate. I bought baby gates and gated her in the kitchen, linoleum floor, rugs taken up, and left her with toys, water, blanket, etc. The very frist day she jumped the gate and slept on the couch in the livign room. No accidnets. Now I just put the gate up to keep her from getting into the bedroom areas, but she has the living room, kitchen and dining room to roam in... she is never alone for more than 4 hours, but still, no accidents. I think that she just did not like her crate. We tried it in the bedroom, the living room, everywhere, and she would still pee in it every time we left her in there, even at night. nOw she is a spoiled couch-pup and sleeps in the bed with us at night... we weim owners are crazy, though
good luck

How long has it been going on? Is it constant (every day) or just once in a while?

It might be that she's not peeing out everything.

What kind of dog is she - How long have you had her.

It might just be a matter of time or oops's

Hi Doglover. We are not too far away considering this world wide web. Edmonton and Calgary. To answer your questions:

Yes, it is everyday.
She is a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
In the morning before work we get her to pee three times and limit when she drinks (first thing).
She holds it all night long and has only had two accidents in two months. She never peed until about three or four weeks ago. We got her a larger crate (put a box to fill the back) and then it seemed to start the next week. Someone suggested a bladder infection. Any ideas?

Have you still got the old crate, try putting her back in that for a while, see if it stops, she may be feeling insecure in the new one.

No we don't have it anymore. It was borrowed. She would never fit in it anymore. It does not seem like she has any problems going in her crate. She runs in their on command when we give her her kong before we leave for work and only whines when we try to sleep in 15 mins on the weekend.

Well, she is still very young, I would say she has only really just got full bladder control, the change in the crate may have put her off a bit, even if she likes to go in it, things might be different after you have gone.
You can only experiment a little, try to narrow down the time of peeing, some do it when excited, she may be doing it by accident when she hears you returning home etc. Get your friend to check her just before you are going to return, about 1/2 hour, or she may still not be empty in the morning, the only way you can pinpoint a time is for someone to check for a day or so.

Thank you for the advice. I was entertaining the idea of letting the video camera run for the day (with the lady looking in still) to see if she peed when she got distressed or if she simply just gets up and pees without any concern. I am sure it would be a riviting home movie.

These chats are great.

That is a fantastic idea, it will tell you exactly, what, when and where, I would probably say it is from excitement when she knows you are going to come home, Ellie my Lab knows exactly when the kids are gonna get home off the bus, she will stand up on the chair looking out the window, tail wagging about 5 mins before.
And yes its great when you can chat back and forth, not often 2 are online at the same time. [Big Grin]

It could be an infection. It got really cold here so I know I haven't been spending as much time outside.

Today both times I tried to post, Ariel followed me upstairs and had accidents on the new carpet.

One step forward - two back.

OK, I think I figured out why Ariel accidented on the carpet. 1) took her for a car ride after our walk today to the pet store. 2) when we came home she got a bone & dinner.

I thinks she didn't pee outside because she was afraid of leaving her bone - and then in true puppy fashion - forgot to go.

I think if I remember to take some time outside with her after an outing, she'll be ok. PS I don't blame the dog when she messes up - I know it usually something I did or didn't do.

Alright, I think you were right. She is displaying signs of separation anxiety. I am pretty sure... [Smile] she cannot be in a different room than us and she will not be outside without one of us being there with her. Those may seem mild but the video will tell. She is perfectly calm when I come home from work though. Happy but calm.

We took her to the vet and the tests did show a high white cell count and bacteria in her pee so she has medicine to take for a few days.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I think that's a normal phase of puppyhood to want to be everywhere we are. Some dogs never want it to end - others pick and choose where they want to be with you.

In a way, it's good that there is a slight infection and the peeing was a sign as you caught it early.

I know this crazy Alberta weather is probably to blame.

Update!
Still peeing in her crate. Have taken her food out as obviously she doesn't care if she pees where she eats. It was just an experiment.

she is on her meds, still have five days to go. I really hope this is it.

We video taped her and she did not show any signs of separation anxiety.

Please tell me she is not going to be a problem pee-er. Does anyone think it is strange that she pees as soon as she meets another dog/person? We have started obedience and are taking her to puppy play time on Fridays. Hopefully this will help.

It is not odd for a dog to pee on meeting people, it happens from excitement, hopefully your obedience classes will help correct this.
Peeing in the crate still: I am still inclined to think this is from separation, even though you videoed her, peeing is one form of this syndrome, she may not necessarily show other signs. If she is still doing this after the end of her pills, write back and we may be able to help more.
