Topic: do you know how to save my grass?

I have two nine month old beagle pups who not only eat grass all day, but pee all over it causing it to burn. I have tried to train them to go only on the large section of bark I have, but with no luck--my grass is now 90% dead. I am laying new sod soon, is there anything I can feed them to make their urine less acidic, or will I just have to keep sodding it? I have tried rinsing it down every night but that doesn't seem to work either. Any ideas would be helpful.

I have heard that if you put a tablespoon of tomato juice into their bowl of water each day, it will help the urine become less acidic. Sounds crazy to me, since tomatoes ARE acidic. I have a friend who swears this works.
There are also items on the market you can purchase to do the same thing.

There are supplements that claim if added to food or water are to reduce the burning. Personaly I would wait til their 1 1/2-2 years old to re-sod because by then they will hopfully hold it for their walks so everyone can smell their pee.

I bought 'pills' at Petsmart and have also seen them on-line. They worked for my 95 lb retriever. Good luck!

If all the above solutions fail, you should try training your Beagles to eliminate indoors with the Dog Potty. Although, Im not sure how difficult it is to train beagles, but my dog can now eliminate indoors our outdoors. Check it out at www.powda.us

I have heard that a lot of these supplements given to prevent burning the grass can cause crystalization in the kidneys. I don't have any personal experience with them, myself.
What I did was section off a corner of the yard and covered it with cedar mulch. Over time, I was able to train my dog to use only that area as a bathroom facility. She does quite well and now I've been able to re-sod my yard without worry.
